Jason Kidd Reveals Next Step for PJ Washington

Dallas Mavericks power forward PJ Washington believes “the sky’s the limit” even though the Mavericks lost in the 2024 NBA Finals with Jason Kidd. Washington, 26, grew up in Frisco, Texas, St. Louis, and Chicago. The Charlotte Hornets selected him with the 12th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. He spent five years in Charlotte before he and two future second-round picks were traded to Dallas for Seth Curry, Grant Williams, and a 2027 first-round pick.

As a starter, Washington can help the Mavericks’ offense become even more dangerous. Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd recently revealed Washington’s next step after a team practice on the UNLV campus in Las Vegas. Kidd’s recent revelation might surprise you, so read on for further details.

Jason Kidd Talks PJ Washington

Jason Kidd can be described as a “man of many words.” Still, Kidd’s words about PJ Washington made perfect sense, given that Washington has many talents, such as a solid jump ability, an advanced mid-range game, and a good passing ability.

Kidd talked about Washington to Sports Illustrated, “The next step is for him to be able to bring the ball up. Get the rebound and don’t always look for Luka [Doncic] or Kai [Kyrie Irving]. We trust that he can play make too, so we look for him to have the season he had last year and build from there.”

Kidd’s trust in Washington is perfectly understandable. Kidd wants him to bring the ball up successfully for the rebound. The lack of three-point shooting — and on-ball creation — hurt the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics. The Mavericks struggled to get players to initiate offense whenever the ball left Luka Doncic’s hands, especially in the three games at the TD Garden in Boston.

Downside to PJ Washington

Like everyone else, PJ Washington isn’t a perfect person. Washington can benefit from continuing to develop as a player. He had 31 assists to 32 turnovers in the NBA playoffs. He can also work on becoming a better shooter because he significantly struggled as a three-point shooter shooting 31.4% in the regular season but 25.9% in the Mavericks’ last two playoff series.

Washington’s direct comment on the Instagram post of his wife and social media influencer Alisah Chanel made headlines this offseason. Chanel rocked a denim jumpsuit. Washington approved and then commented that he wanted another son with her. The couple share a one-year son Preston. He had his first son Paul Jermaine Washington III with ex-girlfriend and social media influencer Brittany Renner.

Suggestion for Jason Kidd

Jason Kidd is considered one of the best head coaches at the moment, and one of the greatest point guards in history, but Kidd has some imperfections. Kidd reportedly wants to rely less on Luka Doncic this upcoming season, but his wish won’t be granted unless players such as PJ Washington continue to develop.

Overall, Washington will need to develop a better focus with the Mavericks. Washington’s attention to detail, shot-making, and efficiency could be improved. His trade value has been maintained, but he might not be the best choice for the Mavericks’ long-term plans.
