The Chinatown residents weren’t the only people who had an opinion about Mayor Cherelle Parker’s decision to keep the Sixers in Philly.

Kelce, a former Philadelphia Eagles, shared his opinion on the movement of the Philadelphia 76er’s new arena to Center City. Just like most Philly fans, Kelce didn’t want the Sixers to move to Candem.

Kelce endorsed the idea of the Sixers having their arena instead of being a tenant at Well Fargo. Also, the former Eagles star presumed that Philadelphians would like the new development in the future. But Kelce wasn’t happy with the situation surrounding the final decision of Major Parker.

People are likely going to love the arena in 10 years, and they’ll be really happy there’s this beautiful complex that was developed down there and is a thriving part of the city. But right now, I really hate it.

According to the Inquirer, the former Eagles standout saw the same strategy the Cleveland Browns and owner Art Modell used to move to Baltimore. The Sixers ownership proposed that they were strongly considering moving to Camden, N.J. The New Jersey proposal was quite enticing as they proposed $800 million in tax revenue. Also, the Sixers could start construction immediately.

Following Camden’s proposal, the Sixers fans strongly opposed the franchise moving out of Philly. Thus, Mayor Parker agreed on the Sixers franchise moving to Center City in Philly despite the cultural and economic impact of the new arena on Chinatown residents. As a result, Kelce concluded, “They’re strong-arming the city, what do you do? Do you risk losing the Sixers? It just sucks!”

According to the Inquirer, Kelce described the move as disrespectful to the city and fans who dedicate their money, efforts, and lifetime of fandom to support their team. Kelce also shared his concern for Chinatown people and how this new development will affect them.

Mayor Parker didn’t shed light on the deal with the Philadelphia 76ers ownership. But she promised to go into more detail about the Sixers’ new location. So what’s next for the Sixers team? The bill would pass through a legislative process and come to the Mayor for final approval. Due to the strong opposition by Chinatown, 76 Place in Center City may not happen.

Final Thoughts

The Philadelphia 76ers franchise may not move to their new arena in 2031. The strong opposition from Chinatown activists could slow down the passage of the bill. Thus, Mayor Parker should find a better offer that will favor the people of Chinatown. Though adapting to change isn’t easy, Chinatown residents should try to embrace this new development and opportunities that may fall out.
