As the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is nearing, Pakistan Test head coach Jason Gillespie has been positive about Australian bowling. It’s going to be tough competition. But there is no other way but to try and win. Here is why the Australian quartet must not lose against India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Strength of the Aussie Bowling Quartet
Jason Gillespie believes that what aids Australia in doing well in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is the strength of its bowling quartet. According to him, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon are all in a class of their own. He fully believes in this four-man play’s capability to play out with a good show and believes it has the potential to challenge the supremacy of India in Test cricket.
India recently made their Border-Gavaskar Trophy a serious affair as they won the last four contests in the series. But it was a two-historic series win for India as they took over the Australian soil in 2018-19 and 2020-21. India was fine under the present condition, and this is what has made them the strongest side in the toss in most cases. But Gillespie still hopes that Australia might turn things around for them this time around.
The Debate Over Steve Smith’s Position
One of the leading debates in the Australian camp is whether Steve Smith should continue to open the batting or take himself back to his favorite slot in the middle order. Smith’s record since being promoted up to open has been mixed: an average of 28.50 in his last Test matches stands in marked contrast to his overall career average of 56.97. But Gillespie believes that Smith can be even better at No. 4, thus strategically making his middle order a stronger one and putting his talent to better use.
Gillespie also discussed the issue of replacing a batsman who must be at a similar level to David Warner, who has had a huge impact on Australia’s batting lineup. Though Smith’s decision may upset the balance, Gillespie explained Travis Head can take up the slot if required. Head has shone in the middle order and could be explosive like Warner at the top of the order.
The 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy will consist of five matches at different venues: Perth, Adelaide, and Australia, which is to stage one pink-ball test in addition to Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. The Perth Test begins on 22 November. Different venues and formats will test the adaptability and skills of both teams.
Jason Gillespie’s Expectations
The confidence that Gillespie has in the Australian squad underscores his belief that the series could yet be turned around against India. As with any hopeful prediction of a team, despite past setbacks, he hopes this could yet see the fortunes turn around for Australia. All-round bowling and adopting strategic changes to the game plan for Australia comprise abundant chances to make their mark.
Coming into the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Jason Gillespie’s support for Australia’s four-man fast bowling attack and his predictions about this team’s composition inside the mind kind of gave a glimpse into how Australia would play out against India. This is one series that is going to be a high-stakes battle, and all eyes are on key players and those strategies that they’ve played out. This is a series that can become one of the most thrilling in the history of cricket if Australia’s bowlers get into the rhythm and the batting lineup strikes form.
