Jaron Ennis Frustrated as Brian Norman Jr. Declines Unification Fight

Jaron Ennis

Jaron Ennis, one of the most promising welterweight fighters, is angry as he’s wanted a unification fight with World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr. Norman has denied Ennis’ desires. Ennis, who is 32-0 with 29 knockouts, said the offer to fight Norman Jr. was made two days ago but there’s been no reply from Norman’s side.

Ennis wants to take all three pro boxing welterweight titles and make him an undisputed champ. He wants to stay in his division. But he might have overlooked just how difficult it was going to be to get current champions in the ring.

Jaron Ennis and His Challenge

Still, Jaron Ennis is hardly a PPV-worthy star. Let’s not even mention that other champions resisting chances to fight him also may not be looking at lucrative PPV sales. There lies the problem. Ennis might struggle to get the other belt holders to commit to a unification bout. If they don’t stand to gain big bucks from the fight, then the contracts might have to be raised by Ennis’ promoter, Eddie Hearn.

His biggest obstacle right now is getting a fight with WBO title holder Brian Norman Jr. Norman, who is 26-0 with 20 knockouts, is considered the one among three champions who stands in the way. He stands between Ennis and his dream, the undisputed middleweight title. Convincing Norman Jr. to take up the fight will probably need a lot of money to entice him.

The Risk for Other Champions

More people in the boxing world see Ennis as the welterweight champion. Likewise, other champions like Norman Jr. may not fight him unless the stakes are raised. To them, entering the ring against Jaron Ennis means “giving him their titles for the least possible amount of money.”

But if fights between Ennis and other champions are expected to be on par, then it is another story altogether. Nonetheless, no one, including Norman Jr., thinks that the current titleholders are in the same class as Jaron Ennis.

Eddie Hearn’s Position

If Ennis’ promoter, Eddie Hearn, is ready to lavish Norman Jr. with big-time cash, then there may well be an opportunity to make the fight. If such an offer is not made, then it appears Norman Jr. will not be willing to fight Ennis. Norman Jr., however, can still make a good amount of money in another title defense. It might be against Teofimo Lopez, who wants to move up to 147 to chase a third division world title.
