Jaron Ennis Eyes Move to 154lbs for Clash with Vergil Ortiz Jr.

Eri Matsuda

This was cheerful news for boxing enthusiasts. Jaron Ennis is interested in stepping up to 154 pounds to take on Vergil Ortiz Jr. for the WBC interim junior middleweight belt. According to the information received, he is scheduled to dance on February 22 as part of the Riyadh Season in Saudi Arabia. This can be arguably one of the most exciting events as two fighters seek to establish dominance in a rather crowded division.

Jaron Ennis’ Jump to Junior Middleweight

Ennis, who can punch with power, speed, and technical expertise, has dominated the welterweight division and has fought 32 battles without loss. And out of these, 29 were knockouts. A move to the junior middleweight division represents a fresh challenge for him, particularly against a tough competitor like Ortiz Jr. Ortiz owns a 22-0 record with 21 knockouts. Ennis is only 26 years old, so this is the right time for him to move up, and the bout with Ortiz Jr. may be just the right fight at the right weight division.

This fight allows Ennis to move to the next level in his boxing career. After cementing himself as a welterweight champion, he is interested in fighting even bigger opponents. For Ortiz Jr, although his record is perfect, he has flaws, and recent bouts hint at them, making this fight even more interesting.

Ortiz’s Recent Struggles

Ortiz Jr. is a new revelation in the junior middleweight division, but his recent fights have been questionable. In what turned out to be his last fight against Serhii Bohachuk on August 10, Ortiz was awarded a majority decision after 12 rounds. Bohachuk’s fans and some analysts believe that he had won the fight, and Ortiz appeared fragile right up to the final decision. This raised questions about Ortiz’s readiness for elite opponents, as Bohachuk’s constant pressure and power seemed to overwhelm him in several rounds, leaving Ortiz visibly challenged.

Ortiz will face a tougher opponent in Ennis, a fighter who is as powerful as he is technically sound and capable of exploiting the flaws identified in his style. To emerge the winner, Ortiz has to bring his A-game and avoid messing up with his slugging mode of operation, which hurt him during the fight with Bohachuk.

Final Thoughts

The two fighters approach the fight, which should be one of the most entertaining bouts of the year.  Jaron Ennis and Vergil Ortiz Jr. boast some of the world’s highest levels of boxing talent in any division. Although their styles do not perfectly align, this fight is guaranteed to be a spectacle that can likely redefine the junior middleweight division. The winner may well be the next superstar of that division.
