Jannik Sinner’s Elite Comeback Win In French Open 4th Round Books Dimitrov Rematch

Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner extended his excellent 2024 record to 32 wins and two losses with his comeback win over home favorite, Corentin Moutet in their French Open fourth round clash.

After winning three 2024 titles in the Australian Open, Rotterdam Open, and Miami Open, Jannik Sinner is chasing another 2024 trophy, a second Grand Slam title. This would not only boost his blossoming collection but shoot him to the apex of the ATP rankings ahead of Novak Djokovic.

Sinner’s four-set victory over Corentin Moutet sets up a mouth-watering quarterfinal encounter with Grigor Dimitrov which would be a rematch of the 2024 Miami Open final Sinner won 6-3, 6-1. Dimitrov will be his sixth top-10 opponent this year, with his only defeat in those encounters coming at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz in the Indian Wells semifinal.

Moutet Takes A Quick 1st Set Lead

Corentin Moutet

Corentin Moutet produced his first breakpoint of the match in the first game of the first set against Jannik Sinner. With the French crowd firmly behind their favorite Frenchman, Moutet survived an onslaught of Sinner forehands until he flipped the script with a drop shot. Four shots later Moutet had a 2-0 first set lead.

Five games later, Corentin Moutet looked like he was about to shock the world as he had two set points, leading the world number two 5-0 in the set. Jannik Sinner eventually broke his serve and added another game to the board.

At 5-2 and a double break of Sinner’s serve later, Moutet brought up another set point, with the Parisians watching at the edge of their seats. He served a big first serve and Jannik Sinner’s return of the serve went long to give him an unexpected one-set lead.

Moutet took the first game of the second set again, but that’s where the Moutet train stopped moving. From then, Moutet could barely hold back the Sinner barrage. Six games into the second set, Sinner brought up two break points, keeping Moutet on the ropes at 2-3 and 15-40.

Sinner attacked Moutet’s backhand with crosscourt forehand shots, before ending the point with an overhead smash.

Just as Moutet started the first set, Sinner started the third. As quick as a flash, Jannik Sinner produced two break points in the first game of the set. He then kept Moutet on the back foot the entire rally, employing sleek footwork to eventually secure a clean winner that clipped the line.

Seven games later, Sinner served out the set 6-2, benefitting from Moutet hitting a forehand long, to tip the scales and put himself in pole position to advance to the quarterfinal, still chasing the world number one spot

Sinner’s Win Sets Up A Revenge Match

True to form, the world N0. 2 came out for the fourth set, guns blazing. Sinner returned Moutet’s serve at 30-40 in the first game of the fourth set far to Moutet’s right far side line of the court, forcing the Frenchman to hit his return long.

This gave the Italian an early break in the deciding set. Jannik Sinner then held firm, winning two more break points to produce a 5-1 lead five games later.

With Moutet struggling to serve to stay in the match, Sinner produced two game, set and match points on his serve. The Italian hit his return of the French man’s serve close to the Frenchman’s body, forcing him to fire his return into the net.

With Grigor Dimitrov winning his 4th round clash against Hubert Hurkacz earlier in the day, Jannik Sinner’s win over Corentin Moutet sets up a Tuesday French Open quarterfinal which would be a rematch of the Miami Open final between Dimitrov and Sinner.

Note:

Jannik Sinner and Grigor Dimitrov have met four times in the past. The Italian has triumphed over the Bulgarian in three of those four occasions, with two of those three coming in Miami Open tournaments. The Bulgarian’s lone win came in the 2020 Italian Open.
