Jannik Sinner has had one of the best seasons of his life in 2024, continuing from where he stopped in the second half of 2023. Leading up to the 2024 edition of the French Open, he’s already won three titles including the Australian Open in January, the Rotterdam Open in February, and the Miami Open in March.
He’s had one of the best records of the year with 31 wins and two losses; both losses coming in the semifinals. He entered the 2024 French Open as the world number one on the live rankings ahead of Novak Djokovic, guaranteed to be the number one player in the world if he gets to the final of the tournament whether he wins it or not.
Jannik Sinner Comes Out Top Of French Open Tie
Jannik Sinner was imperial while serving against his French Open third-round opponent, Pavel Kotov. He struck four aces, which were three more than the Russian’s one, and secured two-thirds of the points on his serve.
Pavel Kotov also dominated his serves, winning almost two-thirds of the points on his serve, which incidentally were one more than Sinner secured on his serve. This was because Sinner pushed him farther on his serve, forcing him to save 10 break points out of the 13 the Italian created across the match.
Jannik Sinner secured three break points in the match, one in each set, to win the match 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. The Italian has been impressive since returning to the French Open from the injury that made him retire from the Madrid Open before his quarterfinal clash with Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Alexander Zverev Survives Five-Set Thriller
The 2024 Italian Open champion, Alexander Zverev, surrendered the first set of his French Open third-round tie against Tallon Griekspoor 3-6. He came back to win the following two sets 6-4, 6-2. Griekspoor came back in the fourth set to equal the score, forcing a fifth and deciding set. Zverev then won the fifth set after a thoroughly well-dominated tie-break.
True to form, Alexander Zverev smashed 11 aces past Griekspoor, although his ferocity on the serve led to him succumbing to five double faults. Griekspoor was also impressive, securing five aces. But the Dutchman dropped six points from double faults.
In a largely even match, Zverev won 101 points on his serve, dropping 52 points to Griekspoor’s tenacity. On Griekspoor’s serve, he turned up the screws, winning 63 of the 161 points contested. Zverev also produced 18 break points on Griekspoor’s serve, winning five of them, while he fell to four of the 10 break points Griekspoor produced on his serve.
Other Saturday French Open Results
Tomas Machac held world number four, Daniil Medvedev in their French Open third-round encounter, forcing the Russian to need a fourth set to triumph. Daniil Medvedev was dominant on his serve, hitting 14 aces en route a 7-6, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 victory.
Although the scoreline of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, may tell a different story, Alex De Minaur’s third round clash with Jan Lennard Struff was more tightly contested. The German scored four break points to the Australian’s seven and had a total of 118 points to De Minaur’s 128.
Holger Rune defeated Jozef Kovalik in three sets, 7-5, 6-1, 7-6, to advance to the French Open fourth round. Grigor Dimitrov has equaled his best-ever performance in the French Open by advancing to the fourth round after defeating Zizou Bergs 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.
