Italian sensation Jannik Sinner could claim the throne of world number one in the ATP Rankings from the seasoned champion Novak Djokovic.
Sinner could become the first Italian and also the 29th tennis player overall to attain the world number one position in the ATP rankings. In the live rankings, Sinner started the French Open ahead of Djokovic, putting him in pole position to finish the tournament at world number one.
For Djokovic to remain at the tennis summit by the end of the French Open, the Serbian maestro needs to not only clinch the Roland Garros title but also hope Sinner gets defeated in the semifinals.
The problem is even if Djokovic lifts the trophy for the second time in a row, if the young Italian phenom gets to the final, regardless of the outcome, he will replace Djokovic as the new world number one when the new rankings are out at the end of the tournament.
Jannik Sinner Dominates Roland Garros 1st Round
In a first-round battle full of contrasting styles and personalities, Sinner broke the American Christopher Eubanks’ resolve with flair and finesse.
With Jannik Sinner’s aces flying like confetti, Eubanks could find the room for his well-known valiant efforts, as Sinner saved all but one of his 10 break points produced, while converting five of the 10 he produced himself.
Sinner dominated Eubanks all through the match, at one point, winning five games in a row and 10 points in a row. In the 28 games both players played in the three-set encounter, Sinner won 18, smashing 104 total points, 26 points more than Eubanks managed. 60 of those points came while he was serving, while a whooping 44 came from Eubanks’ serve.
Sinner’s ruthless efficiency left Eubanks struggling to keep pace all through the match. As the tournament progresses, expect all eyes to be on Jannik Sinner, watching as he battles to finish the tournament as the new world number one.
Jannik Sinner Returns From Hip Injury
Jannik Sinner’s nagging hip injury forced him out of his quarter-final match of the Madrid Open, which ended a promising journey to another ATP title.
The injury had shown up in his victory over Karen Khachanov where he had to play through pain killers. On the advice of his doctors, he withdrew from the quarter final clash with Felix Auger-Aliassime to avoid exacerbating the injury further.
There was speculation he won’t be able to play in the French Open after spending a month out of commission due to the injury. Recently, Sinner confirmed that his team had conducted tests on the hip, and the test results showed that the hip was no longer an issue.
“Yeah, I mean, I’m not concerned anymore about my hip. The last tests we made were very positive. That’s why I’m here. I said I’d come here only if the hip is in good shape.”
Tsitsipas Beats Fucsovics in Roland Garros Opener
Stefanos Tsitsipas came out on top in a hard-fought first-round Roland Garros battle against Marton Fucsovics.
Tsitsipas’ serving was on fire the entire match, as he edged the Hungarian, firing three aces compared to the Hungarians two, and clinched 62 service points out of the 85 contested for all through the match.
The Hungarian also served strongly but struggled to keep up with Tsitsipas’ powerful returns, winning 65 points on his serve and losing 46 others to Tsitsipas’ superior return of serve.
Tsitsipas faced five breakpoints all through the match, succumbing to one of them. However, he produced eleven break points of his own, converting five of them to win the match 7-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Note:
Ben Shelton has defeated Hugo Gaston to make it to the second round of the French Open. Felix Auger-Aliassime also defeated Yoshihito Nishioka in today’s first-round encounter. The king of clay, Rafael Nadal, faces a tough first-round opponent, Alexander Zverev. Nadal won’t rule out returning to the 2025 French Open.
