Jannik Sinner Storms Past Taylor Fritz To Win First US Open Title

2024 US Open - Final Day - Jannik Sinner

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner secured his second Grand Slam title of his career at the US Open. Sinner stormed past the American hope Taylor Fritz with a 6-3, 5-4, 7-5 win at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday. He joins Aryna Sabalenka in holding both Australian Open and US Open titles for the year.

Jannik Sinner’s success at Flushing Meadows came just 19 days after he was exonerated in a doping case no one knew about. It was revealed the Sinner had been cleared of any wrongdoing after twice testing positive for a banned substance in March. He now has proven that he can put this matter aside to finally lift the US Open trophy for the first time.

Jannik Sinner started slowly at the US Open. He dropped the first set he played against the American player Mackenzie McDonald. Sinner had another tough match against another American star Tommy Paul in a two-hour and 42-minute match to reach the quarterfinal. The Italian prevailed over Taylor Fritz in a comfortable win with his typical relentless baseline game to win his first US Open title.

Jannik Sinner now joins Flavia Pennetta, who won the women’s singles championship in 2015, as the only Italian singles champions in US Open tournament history. The 23-year-old Sinner also became the first player since Guillermo Vilas in 1977 to win his first two Grand Slam titles in the same season. He is also the first Italian man to win the singles title at Flushing Meadows.

His win also marked the end of the “Big Three” – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic – era. For the first time since two decades ago, none of those three names emerged as champions. Sinner had two titles, and another two – French Open and Wimbledon – was claimed by Carlos Alcaraz. Their wins this season mark only the third time since 1993 that the four majors were won by players aged 23 and under.

American Men’s Title Drought Extended

Jannik Sinner’s win has prevented Taylor Fritz from ending a major title drought for American men that has lasted 21 years. Andy Roddick’s triumph at Flushing Meadows in 2003 marked the last Slam title for a man from the United States of America. Before Fritz, the last man who reached the major tournament final was also Roddick. He lost to Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2009.

But still, this tournament brings success in many ways for US tennis. There are two men and two women from the country who reached the semifinals. Jessica Pegula also marked the same step as Fritz to reach the women’s final before losing to Aryna Sabalenka.

Sinner the Leader Of The New Era Of Tennis

An analyst from BBC, Russell Fuller had seen that Jannik Sinner would shine brighter. Six finals this year for Sinner have resulted in six titles, and what we saw at the Flushing Meadows this entire two weeks was Jannik Sinner with his less power than usual. He only dropped two sets and saved his best tennis for the final.

It has been nearly 50 years since a man won their first and second Grand Slam titles in the same season. Sinner and Alcaraz now were seen as new stars. Sinner is 23 and Alcaraz is just 21. They ended up sharing the year’s Grand Slam titles in the same year. Should we claim it now, or wait another season or two to see who are the leaders of men’s tennis?
