The Jannik Sinner Vs Grigor Dimitrov quarterfinal clash in the 2024 French Open on Tuesday would be the 5th meeting between these two top players. Both players would be chasing their first-ever appearance in the semifinals of the French Open.
If Sinner is triumphant in their encounter, it would be his 4th appearance in a Grand Slam semifinal, leaving the US Open as the only tournament he’s yet to achieve that feat. For Grigor Dimitrov, he’d be completing the set, having gotten to the semifinal of every other Grand Slam.
Grigor Dimitrov is yet to win a Grand Slam title in his career, while Jannik Sinner opened his account in the 2024 Australian Open. This would be the first time both players would be challenging each other as top 10 players.

Both of these players met for the first time in the 2020 Italian Open. Grigor Dimitrov received a bye into the second round after being seeded at number 15. Jannik Sinner came in as a wildcard. He was ranked 81st in the world at the time. Dimitrov defeated Sinner in the 3rd round 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Three years later, they met again in the 3rd round of the 2023 Miami Open. Ranked 11th in the world, Jannik Sinner was seeded 10th, due to the absence of Novak Djokovic who was world number two at the time. Dimitrov was seeded 27th. Sinner defeated Dimitrov 6-3, 6-4.
That same year, they met again in the quarterfinals of the China Open in Beijing. Sinner overcame Dimitrov in three sets and went on to defeat Daniil Medvedev in the final to win the tournament.
In 2024, they met in the final of the Miami Open. Grigor Dimitrov was having a fantastic tournament. He had defeated Yannick Hanfmann 6-1, 6-0 in 45 minutes in the 3rd round. He also defeated Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev to get to the final. Jannik Sinner overcame him in a quick final 6-3, 6-1.
Jannik Sinner’s Year So Far
After reaching the final of the Nitto ATP Finals in 2023 where he lost to Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner started 2024 ranked 4th in the world. His first tournament of the season was the Australian Open. He swept through Andrey Rublev, Novak Djokovic, and Daniil Medvedev on his way to winning it.
Sinner then contested in the Rotterdam Open in February. The Italian dropped only one set in the five matches he played all through the tournament. It was his second title of the year. After the tournament, he moved up to 3rd in the ATP rankings.
In March, he lost in the semifinals of the Indian Wells Open to Carlos Alcaraz who went on to win the tournament. In the second half of the month, he won the Miami Open. By the 1st of April, he had climbed over Alcaraz to 2nd in the rankings.
After getting knocked out in the semifinal of the Monte-Carlo Masters by Stefano Tsitsipas, he withdrew before his quarterfinal clash with Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Madrid Open due to injury. This injury kept him out of the Italian Open. He returned in time to enter the French Open.

Grigor Dimitrov’s Year So Far
Grigor Dimitrov started his 2024 season on the 1st day of the year at Brisbane International. He met former world number one, Andy Murray in the 1st round. Dimitrov had a great tournament, eventually defeating Holger Rune in the final to start the year with a trophy. This took him from 14th to 13th in the rankings.
He got knocked out by Nuno Borges in the 3rd round of the Australian Open before going all the way to the final of the Open 13 Provence in Marseille. He lost to Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-3. He then played in the Rotterdam Open where he was knocked out by Alex De Minaur in the semifinals.
After losing to Daniil Medvedev in the 4th round of the Indian Wells Open, he got to the final of the Miami Open, losing to Jannik Sinner. Dimitrov started the Miami Open in 12th position and at the end, he’d broken into the top 10, ranked 9th in the ATP rankings.
Grigor Dimitrov’s performances in the Monte-Carlo Masters, and Madrid and Italian Open after that weren’t as impressive. He got knocked out by Holger Rune, Jakub Menšík, and Taylor Fritz in the 3rd round, 2nd round, and 4th round respectively. By the end of the Italian Open, he had dropped to 10th in the rankings.
