Jannik Sinner Carlos Alcaraz

Jannik Sinner played an excellent match against Grigor Dimitrov, defeating him for the fourth consecutive time to qualify for his first-ever French Open semifinal. Later the same day, Carlos Alcaraz extended his dominance in a head-to-head clash with Stefano Tsitsipas to six consecutive victories to set up an epic clash with the new world No. 1.

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have clashed eight times since 2021. Both players turned pro in 2018 and with just one year separating them in age, they’ve both won 13 titles at tour-level. Two of Carlos Alcaraz’s 13 titles were the 2022 US Open and the 2023 Wimbledon, while Jannik Sinner won his first Grand Slam title in the 2024 edition of the Australian Open.

About their rivalry and the respect they have for each other, Carlos Alcaraz said:

“I’m glad to have him on tour, to have him at this level, because thanks to him, I push myself to be better, to give my 100% every day, wake up in the morning to improve my game and beat him. So, I’m grateful to have him playing.”

The fourth time these two promising talents faced each other was in the 2022 Croatia Open Umag final. Jannik Sinner was seeded 2nd while Carlos Alcaraz was seeded 1st. They were inseparable in the first set, with Carlos needing a tiebreak to overcome Sinner. Sinner then cranked up the volume of his performance in the following two sets, winning 6-1, 6-1.

In 2023, they met again in the semifinals of the China Open in Beijing. Alcaraz was the top seed while Sinner was seeded 6th. Once again, both remained deadlocked in the first set, but this time, Sinner overcame Alcaraz in the tiebreak. He then went on to crank up the volume in the second set, defeating Alcaraz 6-1.

Jannik Sinner eventually got the better of Alcaraz in a Masters 1000 tournament when they met in the semifinal of the 2023 Miami Open. The first set tiebreak loss to Alcaraz was the first set he dropped all tournament. He won the subsequent two sets but lost to Daniil Medvedev in the final.

In 2024, they met again in the semifinals of the Indian Wells Open. Carlos Alcaraz was the defending champion at the time. He dropped only two sets in the entire tournament: one in the second round to Matteo Arnaldi and one to Jannik Sinner. After defeating Sinner, he dispatched Daniil Medvedev again to defend his title.
