Top-Ranked Jannik Sinner Pulls Out Of Paris Masters

Jannik Sinner

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the 2024 Paris Masters. The Italian cited a virus as the reason for his withdrawal, which occurred a couple of weeks before the season-ending finale for men’s tennis, the ATP Tour Finals. Sinner just won a huge sum of prize money, £ 4.6 million, in Saudi Arabia at the Six Kings Slam. Jannik Sinner had been given a tough draw in the French capital. His first opponent could have been Ben Shelton or Corentin Moutet. However, Sinner is confirmed to be out of the event.

Jannik Sinner Outs, Carlos Alcaraz Rises

Jannik Sinner’s exit was announced on the tournament’s social media channels, confirming his fitness problem. The US Open champion explained how he had come earlier to prepare for the tournament and then he confirmed he had a virus. He claimed he would be unable to compete because he felt sick and it was gonna pass in the next two or three days. “I am very, very sorry for that. I will see you guys [in Paris] next year,” he said to close the announcement.

The withdrawal means that Carlos Alcaraz is the top seed at the Paris Masters. The Spaniard is also the clear favorite for the tournament after seeing one of his biggest rivals on the tour pull out. Sinner was set to take to the court on Wednesday in his first match. Sinner has likely decided to focus on the season-ending ATP Tour Finals in his native Italy next month. Jannik Sinner will be replaced in the draw by Arthur Cazaux

Sinner Is Not the First Player To Pull Out

Jannik Sinner is the second high-profile player to pull out of the final Masters 1000 event of the year. The seven-time and defending champion Novak Djokovic is also out of the event. Djokovic announced his decision on his social media account without giving any specific reasons. Unlike Sinner, Djokovic’s decision not to play could jeopardize his chances to qualify for the ATP Finals.

Jannik Sinner secured the spot at the race to the ATP Finals with fantastic achievements this season. The top-ranked Sinner beat Djokovic in straight sets to win the Shanghai Masters, giving the Italian his tour-leading seventh title of the season. Sinner became the first man to win more than six titles in a season since Andy Murray won nine in 2016. The victory for Sinner came after he lost the final of the China Open in Beijing to Carlos Alcaraz and amid an ongoing doping case.

Sinner Was Under Criticism At His Last Tournament

The withdrawal decision came a week after Sinner banked tennis’ biggest-ever prize at the Six Kings Slam. He defeated Carlos Alcaraz to land a £ 4.6 million check in Saudi Arabia. He has come under criticism for insisting that his participation in the exhibition event was not motivated by money.

The event also featured Rafael Nadal who had a bye to play immediately in the semifinals, which he lost to Alcaraz. On the other side, Sinner advanced to the final after defeating Novak Djokovic. This resulted in the final clash between Rafael Nadal-who will retire at the end of the season- and Novak Djokovic. Sinner and Alcaraz clashed to determine who would be the champion of the event.
