Veteran Jamie Vardy Draws For Leicester In Opener vs. Tottenham

Jamie Vardy

Leicester City drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur in Monday’s season-opening Premier League fixture. This time, it was veteran striker Jamie Vardy who made all the difference for Leicester to earn them a valuable point against a Spurs side that should have taken all three.

The Spurs came out with guns blazing in the first half, clearly out to dominate. They created plenty of chances but managed to score only once. Pedro Porro netted the ball in the 29th minute by converting James Maddison’s cross. The goal was a reward for the many shots on target Spurs had in their dominating display despite several other created chances.

Their task this time around was not an easy one, as Leicester City was newly promoted to the Premier League. But they proved tough survivors. Though being under pressure throughout the game, their captain made the difference. In the 57th minute, with a great header, Vardy equalized for Leicester. This goal further attested to Vardy’s experience and sharpness.

Missed Chances Prove Costly for Spurs

As the game rolled into the second half, Spurs were still fashioning chances. It was a missed opportunity from Brazilian striker Richarlison that was going to cement the win. The miss, along with some other instances of poor finishing, ensured Spurs did not add to their advantage. Speaking after the match, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou was left disappointed. He believed his side played well in the first half but created very little and wasted chances in front of goal. According to him, this was a feature carried into the new season from last. He insisted his team needed to be more ruthless and decisive in attack.

This marred the evening for Spurs further with an injury to midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur. He needed to be taken off on a stretcher after his collision during the match. He lay with an oxygen mask to receive medical care and is reportedly recovering. This only added to Tottenham’s difficult evening.

Jamie Vardy & His Timeless Performance

At 37, Jamie Vardy proved that he still has it. The striker’s goal in the 57th minute was his eighth Premier League opening-day goal. This record is only bettered by Mohamed Salah of Liverpool. The display of Vardy was a reminder that he is skillful and experienced, and this played an important role in Leicester’s draw. After the game, Vardy spoke about his display and his age. He admitted that he only takes age as a number, saying as long as he continues taking care of himself and feels good, he will continue playing for the foreseeable future. What has kept Vardy going in the game, according to him, is the ability to remain fit and concentrate on recovery.

Indeed, the new signings, notably Dominic Solanke, seemed to struggle to make an impact for Tottenham. In the first half, Solanke himself wasted several vital chances. It was this wayward finishing that let Leicester remain in the game and come back with an equalizing goal. The reason why Spurs dropped the points was because of the lack of finishing that Solanke had shown.

Conclusion: A Game of Missed Opportunities

This was the final result, after which everybody understood that the missed opportunities by Tottenham were too costly. Vardy’s crucial goal helped Leicester City draw the match amidst continuous pressure. For Spurs, this became a night of frustration and missed opportunities, coupled with an injury setback. For both teams, the way forward will be to address the issues if they are to achieve the set goals this season.
