Commanders Jahan Dotson Has Something To Prove In 2024

Washington Commanders jerseys have been released.

Jahan Dotson has a battle ahead of him when competing for the No. 2 wide receiver spot. He has to step up or risk losing out on the WR2 spot or even worse,  being cut from the roster. To add another layer to this, he’s got three other guys in front of him competing for the same job. He’s also working to prove his worth to new Head Coach Dan Quinn.

These are the dynamics of the 2024 Washington Commanders wide receiver corps. Quinn has no problems with this. The feeling is justified: Whoever gets that spot is under WR1 Terry McLaurin, a guy who has missed very few games since 2019. He’s averaged 1,000 yards for the past four seasons. McLaurin has caught over half of what’s thrown to him. To be the WR2 you have to keep up with that. Will Jahan Dotson be able to win the job?

Then there’s Jahan Dotson, who has raked in 1,041 yards in receptions during two seasons with the Commanders. He’s received a fair share of targets during this time as well. His challenge isn’t performance. He is strong in that department It is proving himself all over again. He has to step up and move past the crowd of receivers who have their own story. There’s former Atlanta Falcon WR Olamide Zaccheaus, who has played as long as McLaurin. Let’s not forget Dyami Brown, a dependable receiver in his own right.

It’s Luke McCaffery that’s gonna keep him up at night. He’s the one to beat. Luke is the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers Running Back Christian McCaffery. The Commanders picked him in the third round of this year’s draft. He’s young, tall, and a blank canvas. He has only played the position for two seasons at Rice. In the first two seasons of his college career, he played quarterback. In Saturday’s 13-6 loss to the Miami Dolphins, he caught both of his targets for 30 yards. This preseason he has caught four out of his five targets for 55 yards. Who wouldn’t want a younger, taller wide receiver that appears teachable?

Dotson Will Need To Stand Out

This preseason Jahan Dotson has caught three passes for 15 yards. Optics are everything, and Jahan Dotson is going to need bigger plays to step out and prove his case to be the WR2. He has to be more than just consistent, but be explosive. This is where it will get tricky. The Commanders have one preseason game left at home vs. the New England Patriots. This game should be the dress rehearsal for what to expect in week 1.

Even though Quinn didn’t draft him, as he’s said on the record to the media, he has to show why Quinn should keep him. Otherwise, Jahan Dotson will be facing a slew of storylines including there being a more experienced No. 2 that can help McLaurin (Zacchaeus), the young upstart/understudy to McLaurin (McCaffery), and the dependable hard-working player who is ready if given a chance (Brown).

Where Jahan Dotson fits in this story will depend on how he performs (if he gets a chance) in the final preseason game. Otherwise, he is going to have a decreased role for the Washington Commanders heading into week 1 of the 2024 regular season.
