The Jacksonville Jaguars announced on 6/12/2024 that they have made two new roster moves by signing wide receiver Austin Trammell and releasing offensive lineman Jack Anderson.
Jack Anderson cut just five days after he was claimed from Indianapolis. Why the sudden roster change?
Jaguars Roster Change A Positive Move
It is no secret that the Jaguars offense struggled in the 2023 season. Perhaps this led to the big roster shake-up in April when the Jags Released WR Zay Jones and K Joey Slye. The roster moves continued through April and May and now just days after claiming Offensive Lineman Jack Anderson the Jags announced another roster change.
2023 was a challenging season for the Jags offense. Demetrius Harvey wrote for the Jacksonville Florida Times Union.
“Last year, Jacksonville’s offense ranked 12th in the league in yards per game at 339.5 and ranked ninth in passing yards per game with 242.7, just ahead of the Buffalo Bills at 238.4. While the passing attack for Jacksonville will be different in 2024 with the additions of Brian Thomas Jr. and Gabe Davis at wideout, the team’s running game has been a sore spot.”
Jack Anderson was Cut from Jaguars Roster
Anderson whose strengths far outweigh his weaknesses on the field has seen a lot of change in his career. NFL.com notes Anderson as currently a backup caliber guard; he does have quick foot action and “could see time as a low-end starter at some point”.
Anderson was a seventh round draft pick in 2021 for the Buffalo Bills. He signed a four year contract but later was waived and brought back to the practice squad. He then went to the Colts before being picked up by the Jaguars on June 7th only to be release five days later.
Jaguars Latest Roster Addition Austin Trammell
Wide Receiver Austin Trammell was signed June 12th by the Jaguars. Trammel originally from Rice University where he was voted two years in a row (2019-2020) as team caption. Jaguars.com
“Trammell originally signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2021. He spent his rookie season with Atlanta (2021) and since then has spent the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Rams (2022-23). He participated in 24 career games and has recorded 25 punt returns for 183 yards and six kick returns for 101 yards. He has also hauled in six receptions for 42 yards.”
Taking the offensive to the “studs” to build it back again is part of the offseason strategy. Press Taylor the offensive coordinator for the Jags was quoted in an article for the Times Union as saying “I don’t think we tore everything down but probably took it to the studs,”
Trammell has 24 career games with 25 punt returns for 183 yards and six kick returns for 101 yards. Will Austin Trammell along with the other roster shakeups be the catalyst of change to the Jags run game in 2024?
