The Jacksonville Jaguars have been busy this offseason handing out extensions and contracts. They signed former Buffalo wide receiver Gabe Davis and 49ers defensive lineman Arik Armstead. On top of that, they signed pass-rusher Josh Allen to a massive extension. While these were viewed as good signings, there is one key player who has not been extended: quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Talks have been ongoing, and GM Trent Baalke gave an update on where the talks stand.
Jacksonville Jaguars GM On Trevor Lawrence Extension
Baalke isn’t worried about the extension for Trevor Lawrence. He knows these things take time, and talks have been ongoing. As fans, we think it is easy to throw down a contract and get it signed. However, there are so many nuances to the talks. Guaranteed money, length, yearly salary, and many other factors play a role. A GM has to figure out how to build an entire team with big contracts.
“We’ve had some great talks and great conversations,” Baalke said this week, via team transcript, when asked about a Lawrence extension this offseason. “I spoke with his agency again last night. We’re working, but you can’t force this stuff. I said the same thing with Josh’s situation, I said it would take some time and it did.
But we’re glad it got completed when it did so we could go into this offseason program knowing that’s behind us and we can move forward. We’re working at it, we’ll continue to work at it. Ownership is involved, obviously. Coach is involved; we’re going to put our best foot forward and hope to get something accomplished here.”
The moral of the story is Jacksonville Jaguars fans don’t have to worry. An extension is going to get done it is just a matter of when. There are a lot of factors at play including the salary cap. However, the quarterback is the most important position in football so the team will get it done.
2024 Outlook
The Jacksonville Jaguars had a rough 2023 season. They could never find their footing and ended up losing the division to the upstart Houston Texans. The AFC South will be much tougher to win this year. Houston has made some huge moves to improve their team. The Colts hope a full year of Anthony Richardson can propel them to more wins. Even the Titans have some interesting pieces, including former Jaguars receiver Calvin Ridley.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have the most important position figured out. However, while the quarterback is the most important position, other pieces have to be in place. Those are the pieces the Jaguars tend to have difficulties finding. Their division is no longer a cakewalk. If the team is going to get back to the playoffs, they have to play better in 2024. While that may be a worry for fans, the Lawrence extension shouldn’t be one of them.
