On Saturday, the Philadelphia Union have a chance to move above the Eastern Conference playoff line with a victory over Inter Miami at Chase Stadium, provided they get some additional help. Inter Miami currently holds the best record in Major League Soccer (MLS) with a seven-point lead over the Los Angeles Galaxy, following their 4-2 win against the Chicago Fire.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia is two points below the playoff cut-off despite their 2-0 win over the New York Red Bulls in their last game. What was once expected to be a tight race for the Supporters’ Shield has turned into a dominant performance by Inter Miami, who have won their last four matches and are eight points ahead of FC Cincinnati in the Eastern Conference.

If Miami wins their last seven league games, they will set a new MLS record for most wins in a single regular season, surpassing the 24 wins achieved by the Galaxy and DC United in 1998. Additionally, five more wins would break the MLS record for points in a season, currently held by the 2021 New England Revolution with 73 points.
Philly has struggled against Miami recently, losing three of their last four encounters, with only one win at Chase Stadium during the 2022 season (2-1). A win on Saturday would match Miami’s longest winning streak of the 2024 season (five games) and would also bring their home win total to 10 for the year, equaling their club record set in 2022.
Throughout this season, Inter Miami has been nearly unbeatable when taking the lead, dropping points in only one match after scoring first (a 1-1 draw with New York City FC). It’s unusual to see the Union fighting for a playoff spot this late in the season, having finished in the top four in the Eastern Conference for the past five years.
