Serie A leaders Inter Milan have further strengthened their position at the top of the league. After a hard-fought 2.1 against Genoa, Inter extended their lead to an impressive 15 points. The match at San Siro saw Inter overcome a stubborn Genoa to solidify their position at the top.
Inter Overcome Early Struggles to Secure Vital Three Points
Inter Milan continued their match towards another Serie A title on Monday after securing a 2.1 win against a stubborn Genoa. Although they faced an early onslaught from the visitors, Inter fought back to gain a 2.0 lead by 38th minute. The two goals came courtesy of strikes from Asllani and Alexis Sanchez.
However, Genoa refused an easy defeat, as Johan Vasquez’s volley nine minutes into the second half brought them back into the game. The visitors thought they had equalized through Vitinha, but the goal was ruled out for offside, leaving Inter to cling on to their slender lead and extend their winning streak in Serie A to nine games.
Slow Start But Decisive Finish
The opening exchanges were cagey, with both teams cautiously probing for openings. Inter’s Nicolo Barella and Henrikh Mkhitaryan threatened early on, but it was Genoa who came closest to breaking the deadlock through Mateo Retegui and Albert Gudmundsson, only to be denied by the impressive Yann Sommer in goal.
Inter soon found their rhythm, and after Barella’s effort was saved, they took the lead in the 30th minute. A slick move involving Alexis Sanchez and Asllani saw the Albanian midfielder fire a powerful shot into the roof of the net, giving the home side the lead their dominance deserved.
Controversial Penalty Doubles Lead
Just eight minutes later, Inter doubled their advantage in controversial circumstances. Barella went down under a challenge from Morten Frendrup in the area, and despite initial doubts over the validity of the penalty, the referee awarded the spot-kick after consulting the VAR.
Sanchez stepped up to convert the penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and giving Inter a cushion they would ultimately need in the face of Genoa’s second-half fightback.
Genoa Fight Back But Inter Hold Firm
Genoa’s response after the break was immediate and effective. A defensive header from Stefan de Vrij fell kindly for Vasquez, who arrowed a volley into the bottom corner to reduce the deficit and set up a tense final half-hour.
The visitors thought they had scored again when Vitinha found the net, but the offside flag cut short their celebrations. Despite further pressure from Genoa, Inter held firm to secure a vital three points in their pursuit of the Serie A title.
With this hard-fought victory, Inter have extended their lead at the top of Serie A with 15 points. The win strengthens their grip on the title race and keeps their dreams alive. However, the Nerazzurri needs to keep a keen eye on a resurgent Juventus in the second position.
Although Inter has had a strong campaign with attacking prowess and defensive strength, the narrow victory against Genoa is a reminder of the areas that need improvement. To secure the title, Inter has to put in more work and avoid a sluggish start to the remaining games. Thus, they will need to focus as the season enters a critical stage and intensify to achieve their ultimate goal.
