Mohammed Shami, an Indian fast bowler, is recovering quickly from an ankle injury that has prevented him from playing cricket since the ODI World Cup in November. It is expected that he would be fit to participate in India’s home season, which starts in September with a Test series against Bangladesh. After receiving an update on Shami’s progress, the selectors will decide soon whether or not to let him participate in at least one of the Duleep Trophy matches, which shall begin on September 5 in Anantapur to show his fitness.
He is nearing the end of his recovery at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Ajit Agarkar, India’s chief selector, confirmed before the team’s July trip to Sri Lanka that Mohammed Shami had started bowling. Also, his comeback target would be the first Test match against Bangladesh, which will be played in Chennai on September 19.
Mohammed Shami’s Return At A Perfect Time
Shami began bowling again last month for the first time since his operation, and he has been gradually increasing his effort while saying he is not in any pain. Ajit Agarkar said, “We pretty much know who the guys are. There are some injuries right now, but hopefully, they’ll be back up. The fact that Mohammed Shami has begun bowling is encouraging,”
“The first Test is on September 19, and that was always the intention. I’ll have to check with the folks at the NCA to find out whether that is his estimated period of recuperation.” In light of the upcoming hectic Test calendar, Agarkar also underlined the significance of depth in the fast bowling unit.
“There are a lot of tests coming up. We can develop individuals in that way since there will be a lot more first-class cricket matches soon,” Agarkar stated. This emphasizes the necessity of having a large pool of quick bowlers on hand who can be switched around to balance workloads and injuries.
Shami’s Bowling Rhythm

Mohammed Shami stated in Kolkata late last month that he would prefer to play for Bengal before rejoining the national squad. Informally, he also took part in state players’ fitness and motivational exercises. For the Australian tour, Shami has plenty of time to get back into his bowling rhythm. Even if he misses some or all of India’s upcoming home Test matches—two against Bangladesh and three against New Zealand.
On November 5, the team will depart immediately after the third Test against New Zealand. In addition, Mohammed Shami will have many opportunities to improve because the Ranji Trophy begins in October. India’s A team will play two first-class matches in Australia beginning on October 31. When Shami’s ankle issue first became noticeable following the 2023 ODI World Cup, it was thought to be minor.
As a result, he missed the Gujarat Titans’ IPL 2024 and the home Tests against England in February and March. However, the decision to have surgery was due to ongoing swelling. With an average of 10.70 over seven games and a strike rate of 12.20, Mohammed Shami was a major contributor to India’s victory in the ODI World Cup. When Mohammed Shami nears full fitness, his comeback will be a plus point for India’s seam attack heading into the next matches. Most importantly for the challenging domestic season and the trip to Australia.
