India confirms Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli availability

India

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have told the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that they are willing to be part of the three-match ODI scheduled for next month against Sri Lanka. This revelation arises at a time when the BCCI senior selection committee is expected to have its meeting. It is expected to take place on Thursday evening through a Zoom call; however, general board secretary Jay Shah is currently in Sri Lanka attending the International Cricket Council’s annual conference.

Ajit Agarkar headed the panel, and along with the BCCI, he has made a few important calls for the Indian cricket team’s management and selection of players. As for the T20I side, it has now been officially announced that Suryakumar Yadav will be leading the Indian side in the three-match t20i series, while Rohit Sharma will again be the captain of the ODI side.

In a recent communication to the BCCI, the selection committee said they are willing to revisit the decision on Suryakumar’s captaincy if his performance is not as good as is required. The select group has set its eyes on Suryakumar for the future leadership of the Indian team in the upcoming 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka. Even though the talented Hardik Pandya seemed to be the favorite for the captaincy, a conversation with the latter helped the decision-makers explain to him the thought process and the rationale behind the selection of Suryakumar.

Senior players and new appointments

Meanwhile, it has been reported that senior players have accepted to play the ODI series as demanded by the newly appointed coach, Gautham Gambhir. The New Series will be the beginning of independent India’s head coach, and the participation of experienced players will be helpful for everyone involved.

More significantly, practicing all-format cricketer Hardik Pandya would only be part of the T20I series, and he would not be available for the ODI series. India’s extremely talented fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, will also be out of the playing eleven for this One Day International series. However, only Rishabh Pant stands out as a player who will represent the caliber in both of the T20 international teams. This provides a much-needed chance for the new man in charge to implement his vision for his new team.

Riyan Parag’s rising prospect and squad selections

Riyan Parag, from the middle order of the Rajasthan Royals, has been a gifted player for consideration for both the ODI and the T20I. The all-rounder Parag is likely to be chosen as a player in the future since the selection committee has not finalized the players for the future team. This makes no provision for Yadav in the ODI series, while left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will be in only the T20I side.

As for the other squad, Shreyas Iyer, who last time performed for INDI in the ICC World Cup, is expected to be included in the list of the ODI squad. This year, in January, Iyer did not make it to BCCI’s annual contract list, but an international call-up is almost certain to see him regain his place. Also, Mumbai all-rounder Shivam Dube is expected to be a part of the two squads, especially when Pandya has decided to give the ODI series a miss.
