The Indianapolis Colts just received miserable news on the injury front just a week into NFL Training Camp. Defensive End Samson Ebukam suffered an injury in practice yesterday, and according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, it is a torn Achilles for Ebukam. This injury ended Ebukam’s season before he ever got to play a snap of regular season football. He played all 17 games last season and had 57 total along with a career-high 9.5 sacks. How will the Indianapolis Colts fare during the upcoming season without one of their key defensive pieces?

Samson Ebukam was drafted in 2017 by the Los Angeles Rams. He spent the first four seasons in Los Angeles before spending 2021 and 2022 with the San Francisco 49ers. He signed a three-year $24 million contract with the Indianapolis Colts during the 2023 NFL Offseason. Ebukam has 281 career tackles and 33 sacks over 113 games in the National Football League.
How Will The Indianapolis Colts Defense Fare Without Ebukam?
Indianapolis narrowly missed out on the NFL Playoffs last season with a 9-8 record. They had a chance to make the Playoffs win a win in week 17 but lost 23-19 to the Houston Texans. Indianapolis was able to be so successful without a key offensive piece. Rookie Quarterback Anthony Richardson was limited to four games last season with a shoulder injury.
Indy’s defense was poor last season. They were 24th in total yards allowed, 28th in points per game allowed, and 24th in rushing yards allowed. The Ebukam loss will be a costly one because even with his services, the Indianapolis Colts were not expected to have a strong defense during the 2024 NFL season.
For the Colts to threaten for the NFL Playoffs again this season, it will be incumbent upon the offense to shoulder the load. A healthy Richardson to go along with Running Back Jonathan Taylor and Wide Receiver Michael Pittman Jr. should be up to the task. The duo of Taylor and Pittman Jr. is one of the best in the league and they will have to play up to that potential to compete in both a competitive conference and division.
