In Indian cricket, there is never a quiet time. It was less than a month ago that India was crowned World Champions of T20 cricket in Barbados. The victory of the cricketing powerhouse garnered much attention at home and abroad, but the news was marked by a somewhat sad end, with the retirements of stars Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma from the shortest format of the game in international cricket.
Along with the retirement of Ravindra Jadeja, there were some questions on what would the new look Indian team look like. What would be the team composition, in terms of batting and bowling its leadership? Such questions accompanied a new-look side that went to Africa to confront Zimbabwe in the five-match T20 series. And the result of that tournament-a comprehensive 4-1 win for India, seems to have answered most questions.
T20 Series vs Zimbabwe Proves India is Blessed with Talent
In cricket, there is a saying: ‘Form is temporary, but class is permanent’. Following the retirement of two stalwarts of Indian cricket and the game as a whole, the search was naturally on to find their successors. Whilst there is no shortage of quality players coming out of the ranks of India’s domestic scene finding the true potential that could be champion cricketers is another matter.
As it happened in the T20 series against Zimbabwe, the talented players in India’s ranks, who had already proved themselves in the IPL now showcased their talent on the international stage. The standouts who will most likely take Rohit’s and Kohli’s place in Indian cricket are captain Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhishek Sharma. Two or more of these players are bound to become a mainstay in the Indian top order, forming the core of the strong batting that India is renowned for. The question can they maintain their form and keep developing into players of the future?
Rohit and Virat will be Missed – But Not for their Abilities
Whilst it is still very early from the standpoint of international cricket the talent and ability showcased by India’s batting top guns gives the leadership every reason to believe that another crop of cricketing greats are in the making. Rohit and Virat were among the very best players of this generation, and what kept them apart was their attacking cricket, and their ability to keep evolving with the game. This has to be the priority for the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Abhishek Sharma to grow stronger in Indian cricket.
The game never stops changing whilst the fundamentals remain the same. Opposition sides, notably strong ones like Australia will be developing strategies to counter rising players, so it is up to the Indian young guns to stay ahead of it. Whilst resources are never a question in Indian cricket, leadership and management can be. This is where smart thinking with foresight is required to guide the development of these players.
India Cricket Needs a Winning Spirit
When one looks at some of the greatest sides in international cricket, from the West Indies team of the late 1970s to the early 1990s, to the Australian side from the late 1990s to the late 2007s, what you find is a unit that believes it can win against any opposition on any given day. Indian cricket in the post-Kohli, Sharma era, needs to develop something similar. If they do, then expect many more trophies.
