Indian Cricket All-Rounder Ravindra Jadeja Makes History

Karthik on Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja

In Test cricket, India’s all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is getting better and better. In the 147-year history of cricket, he has recently set a record that no other player has been able to match. In a Test match, Jadeja has become the only player in history to hit more than 2,000 runs and take more than 200 wickets in a winning effort. He accomplished the feat at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium during India’s opening Test match against Bangladesh.

The next player who has the potential to match Ravindra Jadeja’s record is Ravichandran Ashwin. In Test cricket, the star all-rounder has amassed 1943 runs and claimed 369 wickets in a winning cause. Bowlers who partner with Ravichandran Ashwin can be pushed behind the giant shadow of the master off-spinner, even if that person is Jadeja, a brilliant player in his own right. Unless they are freaks like Jasprit Bumrah.

Ravindra Jadeja’s Unique Approach

Ravindra Jadeja will become one of the select few cricket players to have accomplished the remarkable feat of 300 wickets and 3000 runs in the longest format at some point during the Kanpur Test later this week. Currently standing at 299 wickets and 3122 runs. Recall that just ten players in cricket history—two of whom are Indians, Ashwin and Kapil Dev—have accomplished this feat.

Jacques Kallis and Gary Sobers are two other well-known players missing from that list. Yet even so, Jadeja’s name is rarely spoken in the same sentence as some of the previously mentioned all-rounders. In part, this is due to Ravindra Jadeja’s style of play, which is characterized by his eloquence and willingness to brag about his abilities in public or on his YouTube channel.

Ravindra Jadeja does neither of these things. He is content to operate covertly, much like a stealth fighter jet. However, when faced with a situation that necessitates a rescue mission, Jadeja’s fighting instincts kick in. In this sense, he is very task-oriented. Think back to India’s commanding 280-run victory against Bangladesh in their first Test match.

Jadeja’s Competitive Spirit Shines

Ravindra Jadeja took five wickets in the match, but Ashwin ‘out-bowled’ him with a six-wicket haul in the second innings. Jadeja is an artist whose strength lies not in his athletic ability alone but also in his competitive spirit. Together, they took India from 144 for six to 376 all out with a 199-run stand for the seventh wicket. Jadeja made 86. Unfortunately, Ravindra Jadeja’s outstanding performance overall was again reduced to a minor detail visible only to the most astute observer.

There were only 35 overs of play on the first day of the second Test match between Bangladesh and India due to rain. Bangladesh lost three wickets during this brief period. Akash Deep and R Ashwin grabbed two wickets each. On Day 2, however, the rain may once again play a spoiler as Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim will start batting for Bangladesh. Former India captain Kapil Dev gathered 5248 runs and claimed 434 wickets in his 131 Test appearances. Kapil once held the record for most wickets taken in Test cricket. Another excellent all-rounder, Ashwin, has amassed 3422 runs and taken 523 wickets.
