The curtains have fallen on the Paris Olympics 2024 and what a performance India has put up at the show. Since the very first medal, the country has been on a roll, grasping six medals in total. This journey had its ups and downs, but it simply revealed how strong and spirited Indian sports is.
It all started in Paris with Manu Bhaker’s historic bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event, thus becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic shooting medal. Shortly after, Bhaker combined with Sarabjot Singh in the 10 m air pistol mixed team event to win another bronze, which was the first for India in this category.
India’s Historic Olympic Wins
Swapnil Kusale added to this list by winning the bronze medal in the men’s 50-meter rifle in three positions. It marked the first time that India had won three or more shooting medals at the same Olympic Games. The women of the Indian field hockey team endured a devastating semifinal loss to Argentina, only to recover and win against Britain for bronze.
Star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra added a silver to India’s kitty with 89.45 m. It was a wonderful feat, no doubt, but somehow the feeling was one of joy tempered with disappointment. He could not defend his Tokyo gold, yet his performance was stellar.
Aman Sehrawat became the youngest Indian to win an individual Olympic medal as he took home bronze in men’s 57 kg freestyle wrestling. Much before that, there was a buzz about his win over Darian Cruz of Puerto Rico. Vinesh Phogat’s appeal is still due. In case her disqualification gets nullified, India might end up with a seventh medal.
India’s Olympic Spirit Endures
India has wrapped up the Paris Olympics with six medals. One silver and five bronze. This is one less than the count of seven medals won in Tokyo. In Tokyo, India won one gold, two silvers, and four bronze. This time, too, the performance was strong, even though it earned one medal fewer. The curtain falls on the games in Paris, and all eyes turn towards the future. The six-medal haul at Paris 2024 was an indication enough that India’s rise as a sports power was complete.
It was a journey of victories and lessons learned. The nation is already preparing to cheer its athletes onto the next Olympics. We not only look at our achievements but also celebrate the victories while gearing ourselves up to prepare for the next challenge. That spirit of Indian sports lives on, inspiring. Each medal is a story of hard work, sweat, blood, and tears.
