India T20 Squad for Zimbabwe Tour in July Announced

Shubman Gill

The moment you thought that we had enough cricket to last us some time, we were hit with the news of another cricket tournament featuring Team India. India’s tour of Zimbabwe gets underway this Saturday the 6th of July 2024, and the 15-man squad that will take on the African cricketing nation has been announced.

The squad features a fresh set of faces in contrast to the team that just won the World T20 2024 last week. And considering the nature of the opposition this is another opportunity for the Indian selectors to test the bench strength of the powerful Indian side. The group of players are the cricketers you would expect to make it to the top 15, inclusive of players who performed well during the Indian Premier League 2024.

Shubman Gill leads a Young Indian Side

The change was an expected one. It was natural that Indian selectors would bring in a host of changes to a tour against a weaker opposition, right on the back of a successful World T20 campaign. Indian players are on top of the world, particularly the ones who played in the final, and many of them deserve a well-earned rest. And given India’s growing strength of its reserve players, it is the right choice to field a different lineup against Zimbabwe.

As expected Shubman Gill, the captain of the Gujarat Titans will lead the new-look Indian side. A lineup that features a captain of another IPL team: Chennai Super Kings, whose skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad is also in the squad. This is a strong group of players featuring a good crop of batting depth, bowling variety, and experience at the highest level.

Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube and Yashasvi to Join Squad

At the time of writing, news is breaking that players who were part of India’s T20 World Cup winning squad are also set to join the main team. However, they will only do so, once they reach India with the rest of the winning group of players. This decision makes sense. Two of the three players had virtually match time during the recently concluded tournament. And Shivam Dube’s time in the middle was limited at best.

Also, having more experienced heads like Sanju Samson would help newer players settle in. In tours like this, where the opposition is relatively weaker, it is easy to underestimate their capacities, particularly for a young side. This can be avoided when there are a few experienced heads around. In addition, it just adds to the number of options the selectors will have when choosing the final 11.

Time for the Young Stars to Shine

This Team India squad might be low on experience but it more than makes up for it in ability. A power-packed unit that features heavy hitters like Rinku Singh, Abhishek Sharma, and Sai Sudharsan; with solid bowling options in the likes of Ravi Bishnoi, Tushar Deshpande, and Khaleel Ahmed. This is a tough team to beat. The only concern for India is the danger of taking it too easy. Zimbabwe is not the strongest side in the world, and there is the temptation to take the opposition lightly, and the African side will be waiting for an opportunity to pounce.
