The Illinois Fighting Illini head to Eugene this weekend to take on the top-ranked Oregon Ducks in a Big Ten battle. Oregon will be taking the field for the first time this season as the top team in the country after shutting out Purdue 35-0 last Friday night. Illinois climbed two spots in the rankings after their big win at home against the Michigan Wolverines. This primetime matchup will likely be the last time each of these teams faces a ranked opponent in the regular season.
Heisman hopeful Dillon Gabriel hopes to add to his case against an Illinois defense that allowed 49 points to the Purdue team that Oregon downed a week ago. Premier playmakers on the Oregon offense including Jordan James and Tez Johnson will look to help Gabriel break the game open and serve Illinois their second loss of the season. On the other side, Illinois QB Luke Altmyer will face his biggest test of the year against an Oregon defensive line that will be coming after him and knock him off the course of his great 2024 season.
Ranked Big Ten Showdown At Autzen
The Oregon Ducks will play host to the Illinois Fighting Illini this Saturday afternoon in a top-20 Big Ten matchup. Autzen Stadium in Eugene will see their team take the field as the number one team in the country. Dan Lanning’s group is riding high off their 32-31 win over Ohio State two weeks ago. After shutting out Purdue 35-0 last week, Oregon is looking at what is in all likelihood their final ranked matchup of the season this week until they start postseason play.
Illinois faces a similar situation. After facing four ranked foes in their first seven games of 2024, Oregon will likely be their last ranked opponent of the regular season. The 20th-ranked Fighting Illini check in at 6-1 on the year and are hungry for more after beating Michigan 21-7 last week. This weekend will be the first game in 17 years where Illinois is taking on the number one team in the country. They’re hoping for a similar result as that day in 2007 when the Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes.
Heisman Hopeful Leads Oregon Ducks
As the college football season enters the meat of its schedule, attention starts to go toward the Heisman Trophy Award. After a sluggish start and a lack of explosive plays in the passing game, Dillon Gabriel has shot up the rankings with his poised and precise play for the Oregon Ducks. He has led the Ducks offensive improvement as 2024 has gone on, helped out by a pair of big-time playmakers. RB Jordan James and WR Tez Johnson lead the fleet of weapons that Gabriel has at his disposal and they will each have a huge role in Oregon’s success or failure against the Illinois defense.
Gabriel leads the offense but head coach for the Oregon Ducks Dan Lanning made his bones on the other side of the football. Lanning has worked to revamp the Oregon defense and turn it into a fierce unit. In their first year in the Big Ten, this defense has shown itself to be up to par with the rest of the conference. The defense may not have any big-name stars but players shine at different times, helping the defense play well as a group and lead the way for this Oregon team, ranking 13th in the country in scoring defense. The defense has a tall task dealing with the Illinois Fighting Illini offense.
Upset-Minded Illinois Fighting Illini
2024 has been a surprising year so far for the Illinois Fighting Illini. While the people within the program might not be shocked by their stellar start to the season, their opponents have been. In four games against ranked opponents, the Fighting Illini are 3-1, with the only loss coming at the hands of Penn State. Illinois has built a team that is dynamic through the air and as of late can move the ball on the ground as well. Their opportunistic and staunch defense has helped them ascend to the 20th place in the AP Top 25 ahead of this game and they might have a scare prepared for the Ducks.
One of the biggest reasons for Illinois’ success has been QB Luke Altmyer, who flaunts a tremendous 15:1 TD/INT ratio. He has established dangerous connections with Pat Bryant and Zakhari Franklin on the perimeter and they will certainly be the preeminent focus for the Oregon defense. The Illinois rushing attack has blossomed in recent weeks behind Altmyer and Josh McCray but will be put to the test against the powerful defensive front of the Oregon Ducks. Illinois, like most teams, has thrived when they can stay two-dimensional.
The opposite front that Illinois will have to contend with is also a strong unit for the Ducks. The offensive line presents problems for Illinois in both the running and passing games. The Fighting Illini have a prolific secondary that has helped them create turnovers and disrupt opposing offenses, but that will come into question Saturday if the defensive line can’t put pressure on Gabriel to deliver quick throws, making this the biggest test of the year for the secondary. Reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Gabe Jacas will be looking to leave his mark on this one before it’s over.
