Ilkay Gundogan Returns To Etihad on One-Year Free Transfer

Ilkay Gündogan

Ilkay Gundogan has rejoined Manchester City on a free transfer from Barcelona. The midfielder, who spent seven years at City from 2016 to 2023 and won 12 major trophies, returns on a one-year contract with an option for an additional year, despite interest from Saudi Arabia and Qatar. He returns to Pep Guardiola’s squad just a year after leaving for Barcelona on a free transfer and will be available for Saturday’s Premier League match against Ipswich at the Etihad Stadium. The 33-year-old, who previously spent seven years at the Etihad, rejoins the team under this new deal.

During his first spell at Manchester City, Ilkay Gundogan made 304 appearances and scored 60 goals, contributing to the team’s success in winning 12 major trophies, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League. He is City’s second signing of the summer, following the arrival of Savinho from French club Troyes in a 33.6 million euro deal.

Ilkay Gundogan was Guardiola’s first signing for Manchester City and quickly became the embodiment of the style the Spaniard aimed to establish in the Premier League. He was precise in possession, sharp in the final third, and consistently selfless in his dedication to the team’s success.

The German ended his initial stint at City as captain, concluding seven seasons where he played in various roles—from defensive midfield to more attacking positions and even as a false nine during the goal-filled 2020/21 season. He capped off his time by winning a fifth Premier League title and a coveted first Champions League. Gundogan was a versatile player, excelling at the highest level whether he was covering for Fernandinho or scoring from close range.

What Ilkay Gündogan Said?

Gundogan hinted at his feelings in a post on social media platform X.

“I have given everything to support the team and the club in the best way possible during a challenging season, and I was eager to help my teammates in the new campaign,” Gundogan wrote. “Now I am leaving in a difficult situation, but if my departure can assist the club financially, it makes me a bit less sad.”

Although typically an attacking central midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan will also serve as a backup for holding midfielder Rodri if the Spanish star needs a rest. Being well-acquainted with Guardiola’s style, Gundogan won’t require a transitional period and will compete for a spot in the midfield alongside Rodri, Kevin de Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Mateo Kovacic, and Phil Foden.

Gundogan’s departure is expected to help Barcelona register new midfielder Dani Olmo, which the club has been unable to do due to La Liga’s financial regulations that require clubs to balance spending on wages and transfers with their available assets.
