Iceland vs. Montenegro: Preview (2024)

Iceland

Iceland begins their 2024-25 UEFA Nations League campaign with a home clash against Montenegro on Friday night. Both teams are looking for a strong start after missing out on Euro 2024 qualification. With plenty to prove, this encounter promises a competitive showdown in Group 4 of League B.

Iceland vs. Montenegro: Preview

Iceland play at home this Friday night, as they hope to make a bright beginning to their campaign in the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League against Montenegro in League B Group 4. These two nations came up together for this match after failing drastically in major tournament qualification campaigns – Euro 2024 saw the absence of Iceland, and Montenegro also failed to qualify for the finals. As such, their first match in the competition holds significance for the ambitions of both teams.

As Iceland builds up a head of steam going into the 2026 World Cup, they look to utilize fully their home turf and hope for a flying start, while Montenegro tries to bounce back from a couple of recent losses and thereby make the most of their promotion from League C in the last cycle of the Nations League.

Iceland vs. Montenegro: Team News & Stats

Iceland

Iceland has been in inconsistent form of late. Beginning with a 4-0 defeat to the Netherlands in June and culminating in a 1-0 win over England, who were not looking too hard in a game of little importance, the team finished second in Group 2 of League B during the last Nations League campaign against Israel and Albania, with all four matches being drawn.

Under the guidance of head coach Age Hareide, Iceland will be aiming for a top finish in Group 4 of League B. The roster is quite familiar with Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who by then will have played his 94th cap for his country, and Andri Gudjohnsen, spearheading the attack, will be ably supported by some exciting talents in the form of Orri Oskarsson. To date, Montenegro and Iceland have met only once, that too in a friendly in February 2012 when the hosts went down 2-1.

Montenegro heads into the match without an attempt to qualify for Euro 2024 following their final placing third. They have been very poor in friendlies, such as those they lost to Belgium and Georgia, but did open their year with friendly wins over Belarus and North Macedonia. In the last campaign of the Nations League, Montenegro finished third in Group 3 of League B.

Iceland vs. Montenegro: Head-to-head

This was the only victory that Montenegro managed to obtain against Iceland. The unique win came in February 2012 in a friendly match, where they overcame Iceland with a final score of 2-1. Since it’s been that long and both teams are completely different, this will be quite novel to their rivalry.

Iceland vs. Montenegro: Possible Starting XI

Iceland: Valdimarsson (GK); Palsson, Ingason, Hermansson, Finnsson; Traustason, Gudmundsson; Anderson, Haraldsson, Thorsteinsson; A Gudjohnsen

Montenegro: Mijatovic (GK); Vesovic, Vukcevic, Marusic, Radunovic; Jovovic, Camaj, Erakovic, Brnovic; Jovetic, Mugosa
