On Tuesday night for the 2024 Miami Open, Bulgarian beast Grigor Dimitrov squared off against the Polish export Hubert Hurkacz at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Recently, The two international talents held their own in an engaging back-and-forth that enraptured the South Beach audience. Moreover, both athletes had to perform splits throughout the game just to keep the ball from leaping out of bounds.
Aside from the hypnotic tit-for-tat display of showmanship, the true highlight came as the two reached a tie of 6-6 in their third game. When the tennis game umpire called out Hubert Hurkacz for touching the net while chasing one of Dimitrov’s drop shots, the Pole player was irate. In a McEnroe-esque move, he then tossed his tennis racket in frustration when the point went to Grigor. Eventually, when the game concluded and Dimitrov was declared the winner, Hubert still remained in good spirits and shook hands with the Bulgarian.
Grigor Dimitrov Reflects on His Fourth Round Match Win
The Bulgarian, who reached the quarterfinals of all nine ATP Masters 1000, regarded that the tennis tournament was no easy feat. In his on-court interview, Grigor stated “It’s been like a kryptonite for me, this tournament.” He continued to praise Hubert’s praises as he held up his own for quite a while. “It was a very tough battle today. Hubi is such an amazing guy,” he said.
Grigor went on to share his thought process during the contentious match. “I think above all I was just happy that I could stay in the match and have such a good run. I think physically we were both going at each other very hard today. It was a pleasant match honestly to play.” Grigor will go on to face off against Spanish tennis star and two-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz.
