Manchester United could face a significant financial outlay if they decide to part ways with their manager, Erik ten Hag, according to recent reports. The Dutchman, who led United to an FA Cup victory against Manchester City last season, had his position questioned following a poor Premier League campaign.
Despite this, the club chose to keep him in charge, acknowledging the success of the FA Cup win. However, a disappointing start to the current season has led to renewed pressure on Ten Hag, particularly after United’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.
Erik ten Hag’s Situation at Manchester United
Currently, Ten Hag is the bookmakers‘ favorite to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job. His contract runs until the end of next season, and recent reports reveal how much it would cost Manchester United to terminate his deal.
According to GOAL, Manchester United would have to pay 17.5 million pounds to dismiss Erik ten Hag, an increase of 7.5 million pounds compared to what it would have cost in June. The rise in this compensation is due to the one-year extension agreed between both parties during the summer. Notably, this figure is also around half of the savings the club made from laying off approximately 250 staff members after INEOS’s takeover.
After the 3-0 loss to Tottenham, Ten Hag was asked about the possibility of being dismissed, to which he responded that he was not worried. He emphasized that the club’s ownership, leadership, and players were united in their efforts to improve. He acknowledged that while the team has room for improvement, particularly with some players arriving late in the transfer window, everyone was aligned in their goals and prepared to give it time.
Erik ten Hag Still has Top Management Support
Despite sitting 12th in the Premier League, having lost three of their first six games, Ten Hag retains the backing of Manchester United’s leadership. Reports from Sky Sports suggest that the club is not considering a managerial change at this time. Although there is agreement that recent performances, especially the consecutive 3-0 defeats to Tottenham and Liverpool, were unacceptable, the club is focused on supporting Ten Hag and his coaching staff to improve the situation.
United’s recent struggles in front of goal, with three scoreless games out of the last four, further highlight the challenges the team faces, yet the club’s hierarchy appears committed to backing Ten Hag in hopes of turning things around.
While some believe that the ‘Erik ten Hag era’ has ridiculously failed, some fans also do expect and believe that things will slowly and gradually turn around. Well, it has been quite a duration since Erik ten Hag has taken Manchester United’s charge and the results have not been delivered up to the standards yet. But there’s a lot to expect in the near future.
