The Houston Texans are off to one of their best starts in franchise history. While they have had successful teams in the past, they are rarely in the top echelon of NFL teams. A quarter of the season is in the books, though, and the Texans are appearing at the top of many power rankings. This team might be poised for a long playoff run, if not, a Superbowl push.
Texans are picked behind Superbowl contenders in Power Rankings
Between ESPN, USA Today, NFL.com, Bleacher Report, and Fox Sports, the Texans have made the top 10 in four out of the five power rankings. Here is where they rank across the sites:
ESPN: 8th
NFL.com: 5th
Fox Sports: 6th
USA Today: unranked
Bleacher Report: 5th
These are some very promising numbers for the Texans, especially considering the team has many banged-up players. Tank Dell is planning on coming back from a rib injury, running back Joe Mixon has missed two games due to his ankle, and backup Dameon Pierce is also trying to come back from a hamstring injury.
A top 10 ranking is certainly reasonable for the team since they are on their way to winning the AFC South. It’s still early in the season, but half of the division (Tennessee and Jacksonville) only has one win between them. The Colts can chase the Texans for the top of the division, but they have lots of work to do seeing as Houston already won in Indianapolis.
If the Texans have any hopes of moving up the rankings, though, there are four teams they have to compete with: The Vikings, Chiefs, Bills, and Lions. They were most frequently seen at the top of each site’s power rankings, and with good reason since they are off to some great seasons.
At least for one of those teams, Houston will have a chance to leapfrog since they play the Buffalo Bills this Sunday. Buffalo is coming off of a tough loss to the Baltimore Ravens, giving up 199 yards of rushing to Derrick Henry. Certainly, Joe Mixon is looking to match those numbers, provided he is healthy enough to play.
If the Texans do beat the Bills, it’s hard to see any other AFC team giving them issues. That being said, they already lost to the Vikings and they have the Lions on their schedule later in the season. If both of those teams can keep up the momentum, they may stay on top of the rankings throughout the season. They might be meeting the Texans in the Super Bowl if they make it that far, though.
