This deal also includes a player option in the third year and seemingly has locked up the Houston Rockets core as he is currently slated to make $12.48 million for the season. This is the first-ever contract to negotiate a 2-plus-1 rookie extension on a nine-figure contract so let’s discuss what this means going forward.
Jalen Green Staying with the Houston Rockets
The Houston Rockets have agreed to a new 2-plus-1 rookie contract extension with shooting guard Jalen Green, signifying that he is the team’s future right now, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. This deal now has Green locked up for another few seasons and extends the ability for the Houston Rockets to be considered in a contending status for a postseason spot out of a loaded Western Conference.
For Jalen Green, this shows how commitment is rewarded, as he was the pioneer for the NBA’s G League Ignite as the first signing back in 2020. He would enter the 2021 NBA draft and be selected second overall. He is on the final year of his rookie contract and now is rewarded for his abilities. Last season, Jalen Green finished with 19.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 0.8 steals in 31.7 minutes and appeared in all 82 games. Now, he has a massive extension.
This move also signifies that it could be the end of guard Fred VanVleet this season, as he has a team option for $44.8 million this upcoming offseason. This could become the new normal for rookie extensions but once again, Jalen Green is the pioneer of something.
