For the Kansas City Chiefs, it was business as usual but with a twist. And for the Philadelphia Eagles, they simply overran an outgunned opponent. Kansas City had a seesaw affair with Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills before prevailing 32-29. And Philadelphia stomped on an error-prone Washington Commanders team 55-23, thus ending Jayden Daniels and his team’s “Cinderella Story.” They are now set to meet in Super Bowl LIX at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans at 6:30 pm on Sunday, February 9.
Both teams feature marquee quarterbacks, stout offensive lines, and punishing defenses. If the Chiefs win in two weeks, they will set an NFL record with three consecutive Super Bowl titles. It would also be their fourth World Championship in the last six seasons.
Chiefs’ Machine Rolls On
Many interested observers, myself included, thought maybe this was the Bills’ chance to break the bubble and go on to the Super Bowl. With Allen’s probable MVP award-winning season, they looked for all to see like a team of destiny. But as usual, Patrick Mahomes and his Kansas City teammates had other plans. With both teams slugging it out through six lead changes, the Chiefs and their star quarterback once again found a way to seize the day.
In a season considered average by his standards, Mahomes chose the AFC Championship game to play one of his best games of the year. For the game, he was 18-26 for 245 yards and a touchdown, and he improved his performance significantly from Kansas City’s Divisional win against the Houston Texans last week. But Mahomes was most deadly on the ground, rushing for 43 yards and two scores. One of his best runs was on a second quarter-fourth down carry that eventually led to the Chiefs’ second touchdown.
And their agile defense, whose play had carried the team all season, came up big when it was most needed. With under two minutes remaining in the game, Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo dialed up a play that would catapult his team to victory. It was 4th and 5, and the Bills had the ball on their own 47-yard line. Disguising a blitz, both cornerback Trent McDuffie and safety Jordan Reid came hard from the left side, forcing Allen out of the pocket.
Throwing off his back foot and on the run, Allen lofted a ball to his tight end, Dalton Kincaid, who almost made a fantastic catch. Unfortunately for the Bills, the ball rolls out of Kincaid’s grasp and falls harmlessly to the turf. After the game, Allen gave his assessment of the play.
“They gave a good look. I didn’t see anything in my first cadence [to indicate the blitz that was coming]. We were sliding left. They made one more play than we did.”
Eagles Maul the Butter Fingers Commanders
Even on their best day, the Commanders would have needed almost a perfect game to beat the Eagles on Sunday. But their effort fell significantly short of that perfection goal. Riding the momentum from four Washington turnovers, Philadelphia put on a ground display that had the Commanders’ defense in disarray. The opportunistic Eagles turned all of the Washington miscues into touchdowns. And although Daniels did his best to keep his team in the game, the Philly machine was just too strong a force to deny.
The Eagles’ dynamic duo—quarterback Jalen Hurts and MVP candidate running back Saquon Barkley—did the most damage. The often maligned Hurts went 20-28 with 246 yards and a passing touchdown, but he was most deadly on the ground, rushing for three Philadelphia touchdowns. With only 15 carries, Barkley still sprinted for 118 yards and three touchdowns of his own. Their mammoth offensive line steamrolled the Washington defenders, and the nimble Eagles defense had Daniels and the Commander running backs on edge all game.
Chiefs vs. Eagles Game Matchup
As mentioned earlier, these teams have similar strengths. The Chiefs’ offensive line is slightly underrated, but they employ three Pro Bowl selections in guards: Trey Smith, Joe Thuney, and center Creed Humphrey. In the Super Bowl, they will tangle with Phildelphia’s aggressive defensive line, Pro Bowler Jalen Carter, Milton Williams, and Jordan Davis. But at the end of the day, will Mahomes be the X factor that carries Kansas City over the top? It’s hard to argue against this talented, clutch performer.
