Healthy Chicago Bears Week 5 Injury Updates

chicago bears

Only a week ago, the Chicago Bears had 13 players atop the injury report. They had just lost back-to-back games, and it seemed like the injury bug might have been creeping in on the team. Losing makes everything worse. Every bump, bruise, and twist hurts a little more with each loss. There’s also an emotional and mental toll that losing can have – it can even make food taste bad and can affect a player’s sleep.

Six Chicago Bears Injured

Winning football games can fix just about anything, nagging an organization. The Chicago Bears injury report at this same juncture last week had eight starters and five key rotational players/special teamers either not participating in practice or limited. That’s typically not a recipe to win football games. Players need to practice during the week to improve on lessons learned from the week prior and participate in installing the game plan for their next opponent.

This week, just three starters are on the Chicago Bears injury report: TE Cole Kmet (knee), DE Montez Sweat (ankle), and LG Teven Jenkins (ribs). Both Kmet and Sweat were limited participants in practice, boding well for their game status and barring setbacks. Jenkins, however, did not participate in practice on Wednesday and left the game against the Rams early, not to return to action. It looks like another week of struggling OL Nate Davis filling in for Jenkins.

Joining Jenkins with DNP statuses for Wednesday’s practice were WR DeAndre Carter (ribs), DT Zacch Pickens (groin), and CB Terell Smith (hip). DeAndre Carter typically sees a handful of targets per game as a wide receiver, and the speedster is the Chicago Bears’ primary punt and kick returner. Zacch Pickens is bothered by the same groin injury that has kept him out of every game except seven snaps against Houston. Terell Smith got hurt in the Week 3 game against the Colts and has not played or practiced since.

Carolina Panthers’ Injuries, Ouch

The Chicago Bears’ week five opponent is coming off a bad loss to the (then winless) Cincinnati Bengals, bringing the Panthers’ record to 1-3 this season. Lo-and-behold, the Panthers’ injury report is jam-packed after another disgusting loss totaling 15 players, with only one being a full participant in Wednesday’s practice. Six Carolina Panthers were listed with DNP status, and the remaining eight players were listed as limited participants. There are too many names to discuss on the Panthers injury report. You can view it here if you want more details.

Conclusion

Football is just as much a mental game as physical, if not more so. The injury reports are frequently more populated in weeks following losses than wins. This week versus last week for the Chicago Bears is a great example. When you look good, you play good. When you play good, you win. When you win, you feel good. When you feel good, you look good. It’s the self-fulfilling prophecy of winning that affects health both mentally and physically. For losing, it’s the complete opposite.
