Manchester City took a giant step towards winning another Premier League title. Guardiola’s super team won 2-0 away to Tottenham, surpassed Arsenal at the top, and has the title served to win it next Sunday at their stadium against West Ham.

With two goals from Erling Haaland, they overcame Spurs, who put up a terrific fight. With that result, they said goodbye to the possibility of qualifying for the Champions League but avoided giving their arch-rivals a helping hand. A sweet fall for the Spurs…

In London, there were doubts about what would happen on the pitch. However, the home team held nothing back and, in fact, played an excellent first half. With Cristian Cuti Romero as the leader of the defense, they held on well and pressed high, but their approaches were not effective.

City stepped on the gas in the second half and took the three points.

Rodrigo Bentancur, the former Boca Juniors midfielder, had been one of the best in that first half, during which he pressed, cut, and distributed. However, a nasty kick on Phil Foden earned him a yellow card that conditioned him in the critical play of the goal. He didn’t track his mark to avoid another card, and the action ended with a cross from Kevin De Bruyne and the Norwegian pushing it over the line.

With the 1-0, Tottenham slowed down, knowing that the only thing that would serve them was to win. The draw also left them out of the Champions League and helped Arsenal.

But there were two key actions. One from Cuti, who, looking for a cross, collided with Ederson Moraes, the Brazilian goalkeeper, who had to leave due to the blow to his face. Stefan Ortega Moreno took over the goal and made a great save at the end on Korean Heung-min Son.

Thus, Manchester City went for more and got it. A penalty for Jeremy Doku and a brace from Erling Haaland sealed the deal and allowed Manchester City to reach 27 goals in the championship.

Cuti Romero — Erling Haaland Duel

Cristian Romero and Erling Haaland stole all the attention this Tuesday night in England by starring in a duel separate from the match that brought them together on the same stage.

Both teams met in London to complete the outstanding match for matchday 34 of the English tournament. The world champion had the challenging task of marking the Norwegian. At one point, Cuti even ended up on the floor due to a foul from Haaland! The roles seemed to be reversed…

However, after 51 minutes of play, the forward slipped between Spanish Pedro Porro and the world champion to receive an assist that resulted in the match’s first goal. And, as if that were not enough, 40′ later, he managed to extend the lead. Will these be the championship goals?

End of the League

With these three points, Manchester City are leaders with 88 points against Arsenal’s 86. If they beat West Ham on Sunday, they will win the title and make history. Arsenal will hope for a miracle while also needing to beat Everton and wait. In the case of finishing level, the difference in goal will decide the new English champion, which today is +60 for City and +61 for the Londoners.

The next tie-breaker criterion in the case of equal points and goal difference is the number of goals scored. City has the advantage in this case, scoring 93 goals against Arsenal’s 89.

If Manchester City loses, Arsenal will have to win to be champions. In that case, they will have one more point than Guardiola’s men and will not need the goal difference.

The Londoners had not won the title since 2004, when, with that memorable team of Arsène Wenger’s Invincibles, they won the championship without losing a single match; that memorable team had Thierry Henry as a key player, among others.

The Cityzens are one step away from winning their fourth consecutive English championship, something unprecedented in the 136 years of the league.

Huddersfield Town, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United twice managed to win three but always failed at the fourth. City will go for that record and another achievement for Pep.

Pep Guardiola’s men are aiming to become the first team to win three consecutive Premier League titles. If they are crowned next Sunday, they will achieve the fourth, which would be historic.
