Guenther Steiner Advocates for Dual Team Ownership Prevention Rule in F1

Guenther Steiner has expressed his concern that if one person owns more than one team, it is unfair competition in Formula 1. His remarks have been made in the light of recent incidences, one being the Singapore Grand Prix event where Daniel Ricciardo from AlphaTauri helped Red Bull’s championship leader, Max Verstappen.

Overall, the rules regarding team ownership, according to Steiner, also need to change since they don’t support fairness in any team in a particular competition. Although he stated that Red Bull has made impressive contributions to the sport, Steiner supports a rule change for the sake of F1’s integrity.

Guenther Steiner’s Concerns

The concern is that one team could help the other secure crucial points, particularly during key championship-deciding races where both teams are competing against each other. This came to the fore during the Singapore Grand Prix as AlphaTauri’s Daniel Ricciardo set the fastest lap in the later stages to deny McLaren’s Lando Norris a valuable bonus point in the drivers’ race. The decision was considered to have a positive impact on Verstappen, Red Bull’s racer in the championship, and fanned the controversy over the unfair competition as the two teams were under the same owner.

According to Guenther Steiner, in any professional sport, and especially in Formula 1, no owner should be permitted to own more than one team. He stated that even if there is even just an impression that two or three teams are working together, especially those owned by the same company, that defeats the purpose of competition. He feels that suspensions would decrease if the two teams were separately owned because no one would doubt the reasons for strategic moves during races.

A Gradual Approach to Change

Although Guenther Steiner stresses a rule change, he notes that any regulation has to be staggered in implementation. Red Bull has been a crucial part of Formula 1, especially when they decided to defend an almost vanished racing team, the Minardi team, which came to be known as AlphaTauri.

He believes that things are quite different today from the time when customer teams had nothing else to do but choose their suppliers’ requirements. At present, owing to the new rules and regulations and stiffening competitions, he said it is time to rethink the ownership rules.

Final Thoughts

Guenther Steiner has made recommendations suggesting that F1 should prevent team owners from controlling multiple teams. This would help ensure fairness and equal competition for all teams. To him, although the current scenario might have been unavoidable in the past, as the game progresses, no two teams in the same league should have the same owner. F1 has endeavored to continue growing and preserve its sporting competitiveness; the issue of one owner having more than one team has heightened in significance. In this case, Steiner has openly advocated for change.
