French Open: Grigor Dimitrov Continues Rollercoaster Season With Easy 2nd Round Win

The French Open second round continued with victories for top seeds like Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, and Novak Djokovic. In the 2024 French Open, Djokovic is chasing a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title while Grigor Dimitrov becomes the player with the most consecutive appearances in Grand Slam tournaments.

With the season Dimitrov has had this year where, he’s reached two finals, although he didn’t win either. He’s also played in three semifinals this year alone. In 2024, he has defeated four top 20 players, including Karen Kachanov, Hubert Hurkacz, Carlos Alcatraz, and Alexander Zverev.

How will the tournament unfold?

Dimitrov Dominates French Open Match

Grigor Dimitrov continued his excellent season with his convincing French Open second-round victory over Fabian Marozsan in a commanding display of skill and finesse. Dimitrov defeated Marozsan 6-0, 6-3, 6-4. Dimitrov showed his dominance when he went on an impressive streak of 12 consecutive points and won nine consecutive games.

Dimitrov dominated Marozsan on his serve. In addition to smashing seven aces past the Hungarian, Dimitrov won 51 service points, while Marozsan, struggling to find his rhythm, won only 20 points on Dimitrov’s service.

Dimitrov’s serve wasn’t the only thing that proved formidable. He was also at the top of his game while returning. Dimitrov won 33 points on Marozsan’s serve, while the Hungarian struggled to win 35 points on his serve. He also generated 11 break points and managed to convert six of them by relentlessly applying pressure on Marozsan’s service games.

Most Consecutive Grand Slam Appearances

Grigor Dimitrov

Across the course of 14 editions of the French Open, Grigor Dimitrov has played 32 matches, with 19 victories under his belt and 13 defeats. Although he has never won the coveted title, he has built a record at the French Open.

Unlike the other three Grand Slams down the years where he has advanced as far as the semifinals, the farthest he’s gone in the French Open is the fourth-round appearance. In 2023, he was stopped by Alexander Zverev in the fourth round.

At the point where Dimitrov played the 2024 French Open first round, he extended his record as the active tennis player with the longest consecutive Grand Slam appearances at 53 appearances.

Dimitrov’s Rollercoaster 2024 Season

The 2024 tennis season for Grigor Dimitrov has been marked by impressive performances but also tough defeats that have made it a rollercoaster ride of exciting highs and painful lows. After the Brisbane International and a less-than-impressive performance in the Australian Open, the Bulgarian star came up with a strong showing at the Open 13. In Marseille, he battled his way to the final, falling short to Ugo Humbert in a hard-fought final.

Later in February, Dimitrov clawed his way to the semifinals in the ATP Rotterdam. Unfortunately, he couldn’t overcome Alex De Minaur and bowed out of the tournament in the penultimate stage. In March, Dimitrov faced the world number 4, his highest-ranked opponent of the year, Daniil Medvedev, at the Round of 16 stage of the Indian Wells Masters. The Russian defeated him in straight sets.

Dimitrov came back better at the Miami Open, where he put together an impressive run to the final, which included defeating some of the best tennis players in the world, all in the top 10, Hubert Hurkacz, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alexander Zverev, in consecutive matches. He fell short in the final, where he lost to the red-hot Jannik Sinner.

He will look for a career-best result in the 2024 French Open.
