The Manchester United striker (Mason Greenwood) currently in a loan spell at Getafe, was upset after the clash between Real Madrid and Getafe on the 1st of February 2024. Greenwood has been left out of the Manchester United squad, after being arrested and charged, with rape and assault, and threats of murder in January 2022. These charges were then dropped in, February 2023. He then joined the La Liga side(Getafe) at the end of the summer window transfer.
What Happened Between Greenwood and Bellingham
During the match earlier this month, between Real Madrid and Getafe Bellingham seemed to have used the word “r*pist” in a tackle against his fellow England international. After the match ended with Los Blancos side emerging victorious, Getafe officials complained to La Liga authorities about the said word.
The authorities responded positively as they confirmed an investigation would be made concerning the matter.
The complaint has been transferred to the La Liga match director, and an expert report has been demanded from a lip reader, to further investigate the matter and take action on what the lip reader can conclusively prove. Bellingham could receive a long-term ban if eventually proven guilty.
According to The Sun, the 22-year-old forward is reportedly keen on having the investigation into Bellingham’s insult completely dropped. A source close to Greenwood shared that he has directly communicated with Liga officials. He expressed his desire for them to cease pursuing the matter any further. The source states, “Mason has made it clear that he doesn’t want Jude to face any punishment and has requested that they abandon the investigation. He wants to avoid negative publicity and just focus on playing football.” Greenwood was deeply upset at the time, as he didn’t anticipate such behavior from someone like Jude. However, he understands that he may always be a target and has come to terms with the fact that he needs to develop a resilient mindset.
What Is Next For Greenwood?
The 22-year-old is currently having a fantastic time with the La Liga side, and gradually rebuilding his career with 13 goal contributions in 24 appearances. With Interest rising from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
According to Getafe president Angel Torres, there is still hope that Greenwood will remain at Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Perez for another season. However, Torres acknowledges that Barcelona would be the perfect fit for the 22-year-old if he decides to take on a new challenge. Torres stated in an interview with Spanish radio station COPE, “He really enjoys being here and would love to stay for another year. Ultimately, the decision lies with Manchester United, considering their new ownership. In Spain, there is interest in him. Barcelona’s style of play would suit him well, but it ultimately depends on Manchester United. If it’s true, he will let me know.”
There was quite a buzz surrounding the possibility of Greenwood making a comeback to Old Trafford. These are the comments from the INEOS chairman and Co-owner of the club (Manchester United). He is the current controller of football operations. “It is a fresh decision. “He’s a Man United player, so we have control over football matters,” Ratcliffe explained. “To answer your question, yes, we have to make decisions. We haven’t made a decision yet.
Our process involves examining the facts rather than getting caught up in the hype. We’ll make a fair decision based on our values, which ultimately comes down to whether he’s a good person and if he can genuinely contribute to Man United. We also consider if we and the fans would feel comfortable with his presence.”
It’s unclear if Greenwood will get an opportunity to return to Old Trafford. Under INEOS, his contract runs till 2025. He is currently focused on Getafe and their upcoming match against Barcelona in La Liga on Saturday.
