Mason Greenwood was one of the most prolific up-and-coming players in the entire world when he played for Manchester United as a teenager. But, he ruined his playing career and reputation by his actions that led him to be convicted and charged with sexual assault and rape of his then-girlfriend at the time.
Shockingly, not only did Manchester United keep him on contract when he was not allowed to play, and when he came back to the footballing world, but they didn’t sell him right away. Greenwood has been playing in other countries since his re-emergence in soccer, but — thankfully — has finally been sold for a lucrative deal.
Now, Manchester United can do something good with the money.
Manchester United to Donate Greenwood’s Fees
Manchester United know that they need to get rid of Greenwood – and do it fast. They have already harmed their reputation by keeping a charged rapist on their books, but continuing to find him teams to play for is abhorrent. The only thing they can do now is sell the player and reap the benefits of the cash. That is exactly what they did in the latest deal with Greenwood. Manchester United is going to donate the funds earned from Greenwood’s transfer to Marseille to local women’s charities to help better the lives of those who have been abused and need help.
Manchester United hope to make upwards of around $32 million for the sale of the winger to the French team, Marseille, this transfer window to donate to local charities. Marseille, a team in Ligue 1 in France, obviously have no qualms about signing such a controversial player to their squad. Despite the charges being dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service — due to the woman filing the claim recanting some of her statements — many believe that Greenwood is guilty of attempted rape, engaging and controlling behavior, and assault causing bodily harm.
Even so, he still managed to play football after the charges were filed, having gone to Getafe in 2023 where he made dozens of appearances. His playing during his days in La Liga attracted other clubs to consider signing the player, despite the criminal charges that followed him.
United’s Donation to Charities – Smoke and Mirrors?
Marseille led the charge in wanting to sign the still-young winger from United and Getafe. More importantly than soccer, United plans to donate the money earned from this deal to local charities. David Challen, a domestic abuse campaigner, has spoken to United Kingdom news outlets to detail the deal in greater depth.
Manchester United is a massive global sports club that rakes in hundreds of millions a year. And they didn’t release a player – which they could have done quite easily – and chose to retain him for their own financial needs, really prioritizes the financial needs of the company above women… It just doesn’t seem like the club cares, even on a basic level, about women and girls.
Many people wonder if the donation of the ‘measly’ $25+ million to women’s charities is in good faith, or if it is smoke and mirrors to make people forget that they really could have done so much more.
They didn’t even engage with women’s charities until the 11th hour, the fact they can’t donate to one of those charities or maybe a charity in the local area, it’s woeful, especially for a club of United’s size. Services nationally are crippled and need funding, even in the local area. It’s staggering but unfortunately, it’s not surprising, because they had the chance to release him…
Greenwood wants to focus on just football now that the ordeal is over — but, he really shouldn’t get to choose what the media does or does not say about him. He put himself in the spotlight over horrible actions, and it should stay that way for the rest of his playing days.
