Green Bay Packers: Week 2 Preseason Game Recap

The Green Bay Packers have played their second preseason game of 2024. To the spectating eye, it was not a pretty sight on either side of the ball for the Packers. A big downside included quarterback play by backup signal caller, Sean Clifford. He could not get much going on offense to put the Green Bay Packers in scoring position. Green Bay lost to the Denver Broncos on the road by a score of 27-2.

Unfortunately, the defense did not help the case as they could not make stops when needed to gain momentum. Ironically, Matt LaFleur did not play starting quarterback Jordan Love after he threw a couple of passes in the previous week. But, not many starting players saw action on Sunday night.

Backup quarterback Sean Clifford did not have the showing that many Packers fans expected. Clifford went 6-10 for 43 yards and threw one interception in the game. He was pressured heavily during the contest but could not move the offense down the field.

His completion percentage was locked in at 60%, but he continued to struggle throughout the night. Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur spoke after the game about the lack of effort against the Broncos stating,  “Just want to see more fight from our guys.” The 11 guys on offense for Green Bay gave slight effort, but it was not enough to escape with a win.

Passes were not being caught by receivers nor were they having a chance to catch many balls. Green Bay totaled 168 yards on offense between Clifford and rookie quarterback, Michael Pratt. LaFleur may choose to play his starters to prepare them for their first regular season game against the Philadelphia Eagles in two weeks.

The offense was not all at fault on Sunday night, but the defense did not perform to their best potential either.

Green Bay Packers Defense: Week 2 Preseason Recap

Green Bay was unable to stop rookie quarterback Bo Nix and the Broncos offense. Nix could start for Denver in their season opener if he continues to impress his coach, Sean Peyton. The rookie out of The University of Oregon only threw one incomplete pass, going 8-9 for 80 yards and one touchdown.

The Packers’ defense got to the opposing quarterback toward the end of the third quarter. They created a safety that gave them their lone two points. First-year defensive lineman Zach Morton sacked Zach Wilson, which was a bright sign for Green Bay.

Morton was signed by the Green Bay Packers almost two weeks ago on August 7th out of the UFL. The team brought down the quarterback on two other separate occasions, including an interception on defense that did not result in points.

Looking Ahead For Green Bay

The Green Bay Packers will take on the Baltimore Ravens in their final preseason game on August 24. Fans will most likely see the starters hit the field and get more playing time. Getting that team chemistry together before Week 1 is critical to the team having a successful 2024 season.

Entering the regular season, Green Bay will travel to Sao Paulo, Brazil on September 6th to start their upcoming schedule after week three of preseason play comes to a conclusion at Lambeau Field for the Packers.
