The Green Bay Packers (1-1) defeated the Indianapolis Colts (0-2) on Sunday afternoon by a score of 16-10. It was Malik Willis’ first start for the Green Bay Packers in place of their starting quarterback Jordan Love. Offensively, the Packers did not put up many points, but the performance was quite impressive.
Green Bay used the run game to defeat the Indianapolis Colts. Several throws were short enough for Willis to get comfortable on the offense. On defense, the Green Bay Packers were able to fly around and only allowed 10 points. Here is a recap of the Packers and Colts matchup from Week Two.
Green Bay Packers Offense
Malik Willis went 12-14 for 122 yards and a touchdown in replacement of injured starting signal caller Jordan Love. It was his first start as a Packers quarterback. That one score was on a short pass to DonTayvion Wicks in the second quarter. Second-year wideout Romeo Doubs caught three passes for 62 yards. The spotlight on the Green Bay Packers offense came from running back Josh Jacobs.
Jacobs ran for 151 yards on 32 carries. He was the workhorse for the Packers’ offense as he picked up over 30 rushing yards on a few different occasions. Head coach Matt LaFleur created a good game plan to give the Green Bay Packers a victory. Rookie kicker Brayden Narveson only missed one field goal that helped secure their win.
Green Bay Packers Defense
The defense did give Colts running back Jonathan Taylor yards on the ground as he gained over 100 yards with limited carries. An upside on that side of the ball is that the Green Bay Packers only allowed one touchdown to the Indianapolis Colts offense.
Anthony Richardson went 17-34 for 204 yards. However, the Packer’s secondary was in the right position as Richardson threw interceptions to his opponent. Safety Xavier McKinney was able to get on the action with an interception during the game.
McKinney was acquired by the Green Bay Packers in the offseason for more veteran experience on defense. The win against the Indianapolis Colts made the Green Bay Packers the first team to reach 800 wins in franchise history.
Final Thoughts
Things are looking promising for the Green Bay Packers. With Malik Willis having one start under his belt, he will be taking his offense on the road in Week Three. Green Bay will be facing the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
If the entire team can improve from their Week Two win, fans should be excited about the future at the quarterback position. The good news for Packers fans and the organization is that there could be a sooner return date for the starting signal caller in 2024. Green Bay will kick off their third game of the season at 1:00 pm.
