Green Bay Packers To Start Backup QB Malik Willis In Week 2

The Green Bay Packers (0-1) are entering Week Two of the 2024 NFL season. After their five-point loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday night, the team has to decide on their next signal caller for a few weeks. Starting quarterback Jordan Love suffered a torn MCL toward the end of regulation.

On Monday, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur told the media that they will start backup quarterback Malik Willis on Sunday if Jordan Love is not ready to play.

Malik Willis was traded to the Green Bay Packers last month in a trade from the Tennessee Titans. Willis has only started at the quarterback position three times dating back to 2022. As a starter, Willis held a 1-2 record. He has a history of taking sacks with skeptical accuracy, but he does not have much game experience.

If things do not go as planned with Willis, Sean Clifford will back him up in the next game against the Indianapolis Colts. The list of possible quarterbacks is slim to none as Clifford struggled during the preseason. The Green Bay Packers were searching for a veteran quarterback, but they feel confident enough to go with players currently on the roster.

Green Bay Packers Offense

In Week One, the Green Bay Packers offense had opportunities to win. Many possessions resulted in field goals. Jordan Love went 17-34 for 260 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The Eagles kept the Packers’ defense on the field as they sustained long drives in the final quarter of the game.

Jayden Reed was the team’s leading receiver on the offensive side with four catches for 138 yards and one score on the ground. The young wideout could be a player to watch out for as the season continues for the Green Bay Packers. Heading into Week Two, Green Bay will be playing at Lambeau Field for the first time in 2024.

Final Thoughts

Fans will get a chance to see a different quarterback on the field besides Jordan Love. Not many may know what to expect as Green Bay Packers fans have never seen Malik Willis start for the team. Love is expected to miss three to six weeks with the torn MCL injury. As of Monday, Matt LaFleur had not placed his starting signal caller on the injured reserve list.

It sounds like the organization is hopeful that Jordan Love could make a possible return to the field sooner rather than later. The Green Bay Packers offense will have to get things in gear as the Indianapolis Colts defense likes to bring pressure to opposing offenses and quarterbacks.
