The Green Bay Packers will play their final preseason game on Saturday. They will face the Baltimore Ravens at Lambeau Field. As they entered their joint practice with their upcoming opponent, they made a roster move involving their defensive line. Green Bay has signed former UFL defensive tackle Keonte Schad to a one-year deal.
Due to a concussion, Spencer Waege did not participate in the Packer’s final joint practice. So, the Green Bay Packers had to quickly decide to fill the tackle spot before their preseason finale. Schad brings experience from the UFL and his tenure at Oregon State that can aid the Packers’ defense in 2024.
Green Bay Packers Sign DT Keonte Schad
Keonte Schad has spent time in the UFL. Most recently with the Houston Roughnecks before being added to the Green Bay Packers roster. His production with Houston went down last season as he only tallied two tackles for a loss and a half-sack. In 2023, Schad played for the New Orleans Breakers.
His stat line consisted of nine tackles for loss. Keonte Schad ranked second in the USFL with 7.5 sacks and 19 tackles. During college, the defensive tackle made stops at Minnesota and finished with the Oregon State Beavers. Schad played in 17 games, earning honorable mention and fourth-team All-Pac 12 honors as well.
Green Bay Packers Defense
The Packers defense should be solid to start the 2024 season. The team brings back a load of veteran experience to their interior defensive line and in the secondary. Guys such as Rashan Gary, Kenny Clark, and Preston Smith can set the tone. Cornerback Jaire Alexander will lead the back end of the Green Bay Packers secondary.
One new addition that the Packers made was Xavier McKinney. In four seasons with the New York Giants, he tallied 279 tackles and nine interceptions at the free safety position. Overall, if Green Bay can continue with the pace that they ended with in 2023, their defensive presence should be strong with Jeff Hafley being the new defensive coordinator.
Packers Schedule In 2024
The Green Bay Packers have the fourth toughest schedule in all of the National Football League in 2024. Many games that they will play this season are winnable contests. But, the team has to play to the best of their ability to have a shot at making the NFL Playoffs. Second-year starting quarterback Jordan Love received a four-year $220 million contract.
Head coach Matt Lafleur has solidified his signal caller with the organization and does not plan on losing him. Love spoke on the Scoop City podcast discussing the team’s mindset going into the new season stating, “Last year there was a lot of question marks with everybody on our team,” Love said. “We had a lot of young players and guys trying to prove themselves. Now, guys kind of made names for themselves and teams know what we are about. Our mindset is definitely elevated as a team in the locker room.”
With players on offense having some time under their belt, excuses are not necessary when it comes to struggling moments during the regular season if it arises. The Green Bay Packers preseason finale will be tomorrow at home against the Baltimore Ravens. Starters could see more action to prepare themselves for their first game in Brazil against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 6.
