The Green Bay Packers didn’t know what to expect from Jordan Love in his first year as an NFL starter. It is safe to say he shattered expectations. After a rocky start, the fourth-year quarterback led the team to a playoff appearance, where they shellacked the Dallas Cowboys. In the offseason, many wondered what the team would do in terms of an extension. He was basically on a one-year prove-it deal, and prove it he did. After negotiations spilled into training camp, the two sides agreed on a record-breaking deal.
Green Bay Packers Extend Jordan Love
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the deal is for four years and $220 million. His $55 million per year is a record for a quarterback, but the records don’t stop there. He gets a $75 million signing bonus, which is also an NFL record. The Green Bay Packers have their quarterback of the future. Despite having only started one full season, the team had seen enough and felt comfortable paying him a massive amount of money.
The one year was very impressive. He threw for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The interception numbers are a little deceiving. Jordan Love only threw one interception over the final eight weeks. It took him half the season, but he was able to limit his mistakes and start winning games. What was even more impressive is Love did all of this with the youngest offense in the NFL. All of his pass-catchers were first or second-year players, and yet, the offense looked elite at times.
Unprecedented QB Run
While many franchises have gone through quarterback after quarterback, the Green Bay Packers seem to hit on everyone they take. Since 1992, the Packers have gone from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love. If Love can have a career like the other two, it will be one of the most impressive organizational feats in sports history.
The Packers have reset the quarterback market once again. This offseason has been a windfall for the position as many of the league’s signal callers have signed massive deals. Green Bay has the advantage of a very young and cheap team. This team seems to be done with their rebuild and is ready to compete for Super Bowls once again.
