The Green Bay Packers have completed their 53-man roster for 2024. But, they are still making moves after the deadline in late August. Green Bay has three tight ends listed on the active roster but decided to add another addition to their practice squad on Tuesday.
Johnny Lumpkin is a rookie out of the University of Louisiana. He has not played during the regular season since being drafted by the New England Patriots last season. Lumpkin has been a part of two practice squads in the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos. He is now on another team and practice squad in the Green Bay Packers for 2024.
Green Bay Packers Sign Johnny Lumpkin To Practice Squad
In his college career at the University of Louisiana, Johnny Lumpkin caught 36 passes for 408 yards and six touchdowns. His big frame at 6’5 , 265 pounds fits him well as a tight end. Signed as an undrafted free agent by the New England Patriots, he has not had an opportunity to showcase his talent in the National Football League.
One aspect for the Green Bay Packers is that they did not have a tight end on their practice squad. Instead, they released two players to create space to bring in Johnny Lumpkin. He could be valuable and give the Packers depth in the tight end room. However, the team has veteran guys already placed on the 53-man roster.
Green Bay Packers Tight End Room
Adding Lumpkin to the roster brings more depth to the position. The Green Bay Packers have Luke Musgrave, Tucker Kraft, and Ben Simms locked in a spot already. Kraft caught two passes in Week One against the Philadelphia Eagles for 37 yards. Luke Musgrave had 34 catches for 352 yards and one score in 2023.
Both Musgrave and Kraft were drafted by the Green Bay Packers last season. Head coach Matt LaFleur rotates each tight end out during games. Musgrave has more experience on the field at the position, but both are solid players for the Green Bay Packers. With Malik Willis getting the start in Week Two against the Colts, it will be interesting to see how the football is distributed to the tight ends.
Final Thoughts
Jordan Love is expected to miss three to six weeks with a torn MCL injury. This is the reason why head coach Matt LaFleur named Willis as the starting signal caller on Sunday. Malik Willis has not had much starting experience, so the offense will have a different feel to it in Week Two.
Fans are hoping that the Packers can bounce back after their recent loss in their first game. If they can correct their mistakes and play fundamentally sound, they will have a chance to win their first game at home in 2024. The game will be televised on Fox at 1:00 pm ET.
