On Sunday, the Green Bay Packers (2-2) got off to a bad start against the Minnesota Vikings. Green Bay was dominated in the first half after going down 28-0 until the second quarter. Before the second half, the Packers were able to put points on the board. However, in the second half, the Green Bay Packers tried to pull off an epic comeback but fell just short, losing by two points.
Here is a breakdown of the NFC North division matchup yesterday at Lambeau Field. Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love returned to the field, but his performance in the first half led to the early collapse.
Green Bay Packers Offensive Performance In First Half
Jordan Love made his return to the football field on Sunday after suffering an MCL sprain several weeks ago. The first half for the Packers quarterback was not what the coaches wanted to see. Love went 34-52 for 389 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. The majority of the Vikings scoring came off of the turnovers by Love.
Running back Josh Jacobs had nine carries for 51 yards. Green Bay could not move the ball in the first half. Of course, the timing and accuracy were off for Love on offense since he had not played in three weeks before his injury. Many fans wanted to see Malik Willis come into the game to see how he may perform, but he never saw any action.
Love did look better in the second half leaving the Green Bay Packers two points short of beating Minnesota. Kicker Brayden Narveson missed two field goals that would have won it for the Packers. Jayden Reed was the top receiver with seven catches for 139 yards and one score. Dontayvion Wicks scored two touchdowns on five catches for 38 yards.
Most of the scoring for the Green Bay Packers came late as they had a chance to pull ahead in the final quarter. Veteran wideout Christian Watson left the game in the second quarter and was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain. Watson could miss some significant time with the team moving forward.
Green Bay Packers Defensive Collapse
Green Bay’s secondary was without its top cornerback Jaire Alexander, and cornerback Carrington Valentine. It showed throughout the game as Sam Darnold shredded the Packers’ defense for 275 yards only throwing eight incompletions. Free safety Xavier McKinney intercepted Darnold, despite throwing three touchdown passes, two of them went to Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison.
Former Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones made his first appearance at Lambeau Field. Jones had 22 carries for 93 yards on the ground. He caught four passes out of the backfield for 46 yards as well. Minnesota did their job and remained undefeated after leaving Green Bay with a 31-29 finish.
Conclusion
The Green Bay Packers have to get their players healthy again. They came close and had opportunities to win in Week Four. Now is the time to move on to the next opponent in the Los Angeles Rams. Both sides of the ball need improvement as they will have to play all four quarters in each game as the season progresses.
