Green Bay Packers vs. Philadelphia Eagles Week 1 Recap

Green Bay Packers Week 1 Recap

The Green Bay Packers (0-1) have suffered their first loss of the 2024 NFL season. Green Bay lost to the Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 34-29. This was certainly a winnable game for the Packers last Friday night. The worst thing that can come from their performance is that they have to replace starting quarterback Jordan Love for a few games.

Here is a recap of the Green Bay Packers’ first game in South America against the Eagles. While there were bright spots, there is still much to improve on as a team.

Green Bay Packers Offense

As the signal caller, Jordan Love went 17-34 for 260 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. In many instances, the Green Bay Packers remained in contention during the game. However, they were not able to maintain a lead all the way through. Penalties set the offense back and ultimately kept them from scoring when they had the opportunity.

There was a total of 10 penalties on the Green Bay Packers. Second-year wideout Jayden Reed was the top target with four catches for 138 yards. Rookie kicker Brayden Narveson missed a 43-yarder as Green Bay stalled on yet another promising drive in the third quarter. The Packers had several chances to score on offense, but could not capitalize on moving the ball downfield.

 Green Bay Packers Defense

Critical plays were made on the Packers’ defense. New defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley let his players fly around the field on Friday night. Xavier McKinney, Jaire Alexander, and Devonte Wyatt were able to assist in the turnover department. Two of the turnovers were interceptions, and one was a fumble recovery.

Each of these plays only put the Green Bay Packers in a position for field goals. All of those chances were squandered and unfortunately lost the game for the Packers. They gave up 109 rushing yards and two touchdowns to Saquon Barkley on the ground.

There were moments when the defense could not get off the field as the Eagles sustained long drives as the game was coming to an end. It was not a terrible defensive performance, but the team could not overcome the adversity with the mistakes made throughout the game.

However, both sides of the ball need to improve as Week Two approaches. The Green Bay Packers will face the Indianapolis Colts at home on September 15.

Final Thoughts

Green Bay is in the process of searching for a veteran quarterback to replace Jordan Love. He will be out of the lineup for four to six weeks after suffering a torn MCL injury late in the game on Friday. The schedule will become more challenging for the Packers as weeks move on. If they can find a veteran for the time being, the Packers will be in good hands under head coach Matt Lafleur in 2024.
