Virat Kohli feared the T20 World Cup was about to “slip away” from India during Saturday’s dramatic final against South Africa.
Five days later, when celebrating their triumph with thousands of supporters in Mumbai, he requested that Jasprit Bumrah be recognized for his “phenomenal” performance in bringing them back into the final.
“Like everyone else in the stadium [here], we wondered if it would slip away again, but what happened in those [last] five overs was truly, truly special,” Virat Kohli remarked during the team’s felicitation at the Wankhede crowd on Wednesday night.
“What I’d like everyone to do is thank a guy who has kept us in games throughout this tournament. He bowled two out of the final five overs, which was incredible. Please give Jasprit Bumrah a rousing round of applause.

South Africa needed 30 runs from 30 balls. They scored 38 in the previous two overs when Bumrah returned for his third. He went on to give only four runs in the 16th over and two in the 18th, knocking out Marco Jansen as India pulled off an unbelievable robbery.
That victory, India’s first World Cup triumph in 13 years, was celebrated in Mumbai, with hundreds lining Marine Drive as India’s bus passed by on its way to the Wankhede. The stadium was also full hours before the squad arrived, with spectators braving the weather.
Virat Kohli stated that he will “never forget” the greeting he and the Indian team got. “A big thank you to all the people who turned up in the stadium,” he told reporters.
“The previous four days have been a rollercoaster ride. As soon as we won the World Cup, we wanted to leave Barbados, return to India, and rejoice with everyone. We got stranded in the hurricane, so it was an underwhelming experience. But since we returned, it’s been fantastic.”
Kohli also discussed the various feelings he felt between the 2007 title win and the most recent victory. He noted experience as an important aspect of learning.
When we won the World Cup in 2011, there were a lot of tears, which I couldn’t understand because I was young and we had just won the World Cup.
But, now that I’m a senior player, with Rohit at my side after so many years of playing, it’s fantastic.

Virat Kohli claimed he had never seen Rohit Sharma as passionate as he was following India’s triumph in Bridgetown. Social media went ablaze with photos showing the two hugging on their walk up the stairs to the dressing area at Kensington Oval.
“I’m not sure about breaking the internet, but for the first time in 15 years of playing together, I saw Rohit display such passion on the pitch,” Virat Kohli told the crowd.
“When I was walking up the stairs, I was sobbing, and he was crying, so we hugged. For me, there will be a treasured recollection of that day.
Rohit expressed relief that India’s long search for a worldwide championship was now over. “Bringing the World Cup to our country means everything to us. This is for those who have supported and watched the game over the past 11 years, including ourselves.
They’re the ones who have been waiting for this prize to return. Finally, it has arrived, and I am overjoyed and relieved.
Virat Kohli, famed for making legendary remarks following title victories, presented the adoring Wankhede fans with yet another diamond to remember for years to come. “The Indian flag is what we play for,” he said.
