3 Outstanding Players at Safety for Ohio State in 2024

Ohio State Safety

Three great defensive safety players are playing for the Ohio State football team this fall. Caleb Downs, Lathan Ransom, and Jordan Hancock (who has not even started for Ohio State) can all be expected to play in the National Football League. The Buckeyes defense is strong and they are fortunate to have such good depth at safety. It will be difficult to throw on the defense for the remainder of the season. The safeties are also great run stuffers, so running the ball against OSU will also be difficult this year.

Caleb Downs

Caleb Downs is a transfer from the University of Alabama, and he has been outstanding so far this season.  Downs was a pre-season All-American at safety for the Ohio State Buckeyes. To a certain extent, he had his best game against Michigan State. He had six total tackles, but more importantly, he flew around the field all game long. It was a shame the OSU against Michigan State game was on Peacock and not many people saw it.

Lathan Ransom

Lathan Ransom is a senior saftey at OSU. He starts opposite Caleb Downs. Ransom came back for his senior year when many expected he would turn professional and play in the National Football League. He came back to school to defeat OSU’s rival the University of Michigan. Many on the Buckeye defense made the same decision. Ransom has twenty total tackles this year through four games. He is a head hunter at Safety. Ransom teams with Caleb Downs to form one of the best safety combinations in the nation. But, he is not all.

Jordan Hancock

Ohio State Safety
Aug 31, 2024; Columbus, OH, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes cornerback Jordan Hancock (7) watches the snap during the NCAA football game against the Akron Zips at Ohio Stadium. Ohio State won 52-6.

Jordan Hancock is also a senior safety for the Ohio State football team. Hancock did not play much for the Buckeyes during his Freshman and sophomore seasons, but that has changed in the past two years.  In the past two years, Hancock has made 55 tackles for OSU. Though Hancock does not start at safety for Ohio State he could start in the defensive backfield for almost every other team in college football. He will play in the National Football League.

Strategy on Defense

There are two cornerbacks and two safeties usually on the field for a defense. These players are called the defensive secondary. Ohio State plays five defensive backs, and three safeties, in their base defense. Downs, Ransom, and Hancock are often on the field at the same time for the Buckeyes. This college prizes the speed that comes with playing five defensive backs. This is somewhat unique. Safeties are expected to stop the run as well, and all three Buckeyes do that.

Conclusion

Downs, Ranson, and Hancock form the back end of the excellent OSU Football defense. As players in the defensive secondary at OSU, they are expected to be effective against both the run and the pass, and they are. All of these players will play in the National Football League in the future.
