West’s inspiration for the NBA league has its deep roots in the logo. Though it isn’t official that Jerry West is the logo, his excellence as a basketball player makes this notion as straight as an arrow.

Alan Siegel’s brand agency got a request from J. Walter Kennedy the NBA Commissioner in 1969 to help change the league’s logo. Also, Alan Siege was a former college basketballer; thus, it was an honor for him to design the league’s logo.

For inspiration, he called his friend, Dick Schaap, who was working as an editor in Sport magazine to have access to a photo archive. There, he found the perfect piece that would complete his creative puzzle.

Alan Siegel found a photo of Jerry West dribbling on the court with his left hand. The angle was perfect and irresistible not to use. Also, a decorated player with top-notch skills in the game would serve as a mirror of excellence to future generations.

The NBA Commissioner, J. Walter Kennedy approved Alan Siegel’s final design and made $14,000 for the logo. Finally, the NBA introduced their new logo in 1969 when West won his first MVP title.
